Lake Leonida

Lake Leonida is an official place name, but so far it lives in a few lines of Ultimate Edition copy. Rockstar’s site describes One-Eyed Willie’s as a mod shop “in Lake Leonida” that specializes in off-road modifications and hand-painted automotive artistry, “only open for business with the Ultimate Edition.” The longer June 24 press copy that TheSixthAxis printed uses the same “in Lake Leonida” wording, and the PlayStation Store and Microsoft Store listings call it “Lake Leonida’s storied mod shop.”

“In Lake Leonida” could mean on the lakeshore or in a town named after the lake. Rockstar has not said which; that is our reading of the wording.

One-Eyed Willie’s

The shop has its own page, One-Eyed Willie’s, with its official images and what you can do there. An off-road shop fits the neighborhood. Ambrosia is Leonida’s mud-bogging and dirt-track country, home to the Thrillbilly Mud Club and Ambrosia Raceway Park. Where it is

Rockstar has published no map with the lake on it. Community wikis place it in the middle of the state on Ambrosia’s edge, with the Grassrivers wetlands to the south and Mount Kalaga to the north. That mirrors Florida, where sugar country and its mills, the real counterpart of the Allied Crystal refinery, sit on the lake’s southern shore. Community wikis also tie one of Rockstar’s Ambrosia screenshots to the lake, but Rockstar has not captioned any image as Lake Leonida.

Some wikis cite a highway sign pointing to Lake Leonida. That sign comes from the 2022 leak, so it is not evidence of anything in the finished game.

Real-world inspiration

Fans match Lake Leonida to Lake Okeechobee, and the fit is close. Okeechobee is Florida’s largest lake, about 730 square miles, yet only about 9 feet deep on average. It sits in the middle of the state, with Clewiston, the sugar town fans match to Ambrosia, on its southwestern shore.

Two details could matter in the game. The Herbert Hoover Dike, a levee about 40 feet high, runs nearly 140 miles around the lake; it was built after the 1928 hurricane killed at least 2,500 people along its shore. And the lake historically fed the Everglades: water flowed south out of it in a slow sheet through the sawgrass, the “River of Grass” that the name Grassrivers echoes. Whether GTA 6 models either is unknown.

What is still unknown

• How big the lake is in the game, and whether it has islands, towns or marinas.
• Whether you can fish, boat or hunt there.
• Where exactly One-Eyed Willie’s sits, and when in the story it opens. Rockstar says Ultimate Edition items unlock chapter by chapter.
