GTA 6 shows seven law enforcement agencies in official material so far, led by the city force: cruisers fans read as VCPD in Trailer 1 and the Extended Look, a patrol car lettered VICEBEACH POLICE in an official screenshot, where Rockstar's caption has a police officer handcuffing two women, Vice-Dale and Leonard County markings on vehicles, a road sign for the Ambrosia County Sheriff's Office, the Leonida Department of Corrections in Lucia's prison scene, and the US Coast Guard in Cal Hampton's official bio.
Three more, a Leonida Highway Patrol, a Kelly County Police Department and a Port Gellhorn Police Department, come from a fan list of nine agencies spotted in Trailer 1, which Dexerto reported on December 13, 2023. Rockstar has not named them, so we label them rumor. Real-world comparisons below are fan and press readings, not Rockstar statements.
The split mirrors South Florida: a city force, a separate beach-city force and county police around them, with sheriffs in the rural counties. Where each region sits is on the Leonida map.

How the police tie into the wanted level
For players, the police matter through the wanted system shown in the Extended Look. There are six stars on the HUD official. GTA V topped out at five; GTA IV also had six. The stars also change look, and solid white, flashing, red and hollow stars are all visible in the footage official. Rockstar has not explained them. GameSpot and Vice read solid white as an officer seeing you, flashing as a broken line of sight, red as out of sight but still inside the search area, and hollow as a crime reported with no description of you; Beebom reads the white states differently reported.
Next to the stars, evidence icons show what the police have on you: your face, your clothes, CCTV footage, the two of you seen together, your vehicle and your weapon official. Recaps say each one clears a different way, from a mask or a change of clothes to splitting up or swapping cars. Previews add that crimes need a witness or an alarm, and that officers are not marked on the minimap reported. The full breakdown is in the GTA 6 wanted level explainer, and the step-by-step escape is in how to lose a wanted level in GTA 6.
Which agency answers a call is not announced not announced. In GTA V the responding force depended on where you were, with the LSPD in the city and the sheriff out in Blaine County. The county markings seen in Leonida suggest the same kind of split, but that is our reading, not something Rockstar has said. What six stars brings has not been shown either.
Mendez and the task force
The most important police character so far is Mendez, a Vice City officer who leads a task force. In the Extended Look his unit raids the drug lab at the Venture Apartments while Jason and Lucia are there collecting a package, and he executes a suspect who is trying to surrender official. Community wikis read his badge as VCPD. Fans also place him in a Trailer 2 shot where community transcripts give an officer the line "Us cops, we gotta protect each other," and fan recaps read a shared history between Mendez and the protagonists and pick him as a likely antagonist rumor. Rockstar has published no bio.
Prison and the Department of Corrections
The Leonida Department of Corrections runs Leonida Penitentiary, where Lucia serves her time. Trailer 1 opens in the office of Stefanie, a corrections counselor, and Trailer 2 shows Lucia walking out to Jason's car. How arrests, jail and bail work for the player has not been described; the GTA 6 jail page tracks what is known.
Police vehicles
Rockstar has not named any police vehicle. Official material shows plenty of them: patrol cars and helicopters in both trailers, a police helicopter chasing an airboat in Trailer 2, and a police boat and helicopter chasing a Shitzu Squalo speedboat in Ultimate Edition art official. The model names come from fan trackers: Vapid Stanier LE cruisers and a Bravado Buffalo STX pursuit car in Trailer 1, and a Brute Police Riot armored truck in Trailer 2 rumor. Previews say every police car carries a tracker, so a stolen cruiser makes a poor getaway car reported. More on the GTA 6 vehicles page.
The full list
Each entry below lists where the agency was seen, the related people and places, and its sources.
10 entries
Vice City and Vice-Dale County
The city force, the beach city force and the county police around them.
Vice City's city police force. A police boat lettered VICE CITY POLICE, with a Vice City Police Dept seal, appears in Rockstar's own Ultimate Edition image of the Shitzu Squalo. Community wikis also spot its units in An Extended Look's causeway chase and read the badge of Méndez, whose task force raids the Venture Apartments, as VCPD.
Rockstar's Shitzu Squalo image for the Ultimate Edition, captioned "A topdown view of a Squalo moving through the water, with a police boat close by and a police helicopter overhead", shows the boat lettered VICE CITY POLICE with a VICE CITY POLICE DEPT seal, and partial VICE CI lettering on the helicopter (checked on the official image).
Trailer 1: a fan analysis team listed a Vice City police department among nine law enforcement agencies it spotted, as Dexerto reported on December 13, 2023 (reported).
An Extended Look: community wikis identify VCPD and Vice Beach police units chasing Raul Bautista's getaway across the causeways (community reading of the footage).
An Extended Look: Méndez leads the task force raid on the Venture Apartments (shown); community wikis read his badge as VCPD (rumor).
Fans match its cruisers to a Vapid Stanier LE (rumor).
Six wanted stars are on the HUD in An Extended Look; which agency answers where has not been explained.
County and town forces outside Vice City. Two are on official signage or vehicles; two come from a fan list.
Leonard County Sheriff's Office
officiallaw enforcement
The sheriff's department of Leonard County, recognizable by green-and-white patrol vehicles in official material.
Sheriff's vehicles in its livery appear in Trailer 1 and official screenshots (fan wikis); community wikis place Trailer 1's Waning Sands mall scenes in Leonard County.
The sheriff's department for Ambrosia County, named on a road sign in an official Ambrosia screenshot.
An official Ambrosia screenshot shows a road sign reading "Ambrosia County Sheriffs Office" and "Turn ahead", beside Erin Henshaw campaign signs and a pack of Final Chapter MC riders.
Earlier coverage read an Ambrosia Police Department into the footage; the sign names the sheriff's office.
The real federal maritime service. Cal Hampton's official bio has him eavesdropping on Coast Guard radio, and fans spotted Coast Guard craft in Trailer 1.
Mentioned in Cal's official bio.
Vessel sightings in Trailer 1 are a fan identification reported by Dexerto.
For Keys smugglers like Brian Heder's crew, the Coast Guard is the obvious threat on the water.
What to read next: the gangs these agencies chase are on GTA 6 gangs and factions, and the story reason Jason and Lucia keep running into them is on the characters hub.
Frequently asked questions
What police are in GTA 6?
Seven agencies appear in official material: the Vice City Police Department (a name fans read on police markings in Trailer 1), Vice Beach Police, the Vice-Dale Police Department, the Leonard County and Ambrosia County sheriff's offices, the Leonida Department of Corrections, and the US Coast Guard, named in Cal Hampton's bio. Fans also list a Leonida Highway Patrol, a Kelly County Police Department and a Port Gellhorn Police Department from Trailer 1, which are unconfirmed.
How many wanted stars does GTA 6 have?
Six, shown on the HUD in the Extended Look. GTA V had five; GTA IV also had six. The stars switch between solid white, flashing, red and hollow, which outlets read as how much the police know right now, and evidence icons show whether they have your face, clothes, car, weapon, CCTV footage, or saw Jason and Lucia together.
Who is Mendez in GTA 6?
A Vice City police officer who leads a task force. In the Extended Look he leads the raid on the Venture Apartments drug lab and executes a surrendering suspect while Jason and Lucia hide from his unit. Recaps describe him as corrupt and read a shared history with the pair, but Rockstar has published no bio, and whether he is the main antagonist is speculation.
Can you play as a cop in GTA 6?
Not announced. Nothing in the trailers, the Extended Look or hands-off previews shows police missions or a vigilante mode. Jason and Lucia are criminals, and every police encounter shown so far has them on the other side.
Does the Coast Guard chase you in GTA 6?
Not shown. The Coast Guard is named in Cal Hampton's official bio, where he listens in on their radio, and fans spotted Coast Guard craft in Trailer 1. No official footage shows a Coast Guard pursuit, and Rockstar has not described how water chases work.
