Can you fish in GTA 6? Fishing spots, boats and catch-and-release

What is official

Fishing turns up in three kinds of Rockstar material: a screenshot, edition copy and the Extended Look. official

• Jason and Cal on a boat. Rockstar's caption says it plainly: Jason holds a fishing rod while Cal holds binoculars up to his eyes. It is the image at the top of this page. Cal Hampton is Jason's conspiracy-minded friend in the Keys.
• The Squalo copy. Rockstar sells the Ultimate Edition's Shitzu Squalo as perfect for "casting in Gambit Bay" and reeling in catches of all sorts. The boat is docked at Washington Beach.
• Mount Kalaga's region text. Rockstar's own blurb says the park offers "prime hunting, fishing, and off-road trails."
• The Extended Look. KeenGamer lists fishing among the side activities in the August 27, 2026 footage. Engadget describes a scene of Jason, Lucia and Brian Heder out on the water and reads it as a take on Red Dead Redemption 2's fishing. The closing montage also includes a fishing trip; recaps such as GTA News credit the "glory days" speech over it to Cal, but Rockstar has not captioned the speaker. The Extended Look breakdown has the timeline.

The screenshot does not name a location. Turquoise water and a low, palm-lined shore look like the Keys, where Jason lives and works, but that is our reading.

What previews reported

Press watched Rob Nelson play at Rockstar North in July 2026, hands-off. reported

If that holds, it rules out the obvious uses of a fish: selling it, cooking it or mounting it. So what fishing gives you is an open question. It could be pure downtime, or feed something previews have not described. not announced Nobody has said whether fish count toward the species tracking. Kayaking and beach walks are named as date activities for Jason and Lucia, but fishing is not, so we would not assume a fishing trip builds the relationship.

Boats for fishing

Every boat and watercraft seen so far is on the GTA 6 vehicles list. Nothing reported ties fishing to the Ultimate Edition. Rockstar's copy only pitches the Squalo as a good boat for it.

Where to fish

• The Leonida Keys. Jason's home, Brian Heder's boat yard and, by our reading, the setting of the fishing screenshot. Rockstar's Keys text calls these some of the most beautiful and dangerous waters in America, and its scuba screenshot shows divers among coral, fish, an eel and a sea turtle.
• Gambit Bay. An official name from the Squalo copy. Rockstar has not said where it is; fans read it as the game's Biscayne Bay, next to Vice City. rumor
• Mount Kalaga National Park. Named for fishing in Rockstar's region text. Its screenshots show a river spanned by a steel truss bridge, with a kayaker paddling toward it.

The Grassrivers and Lake Leonida are obvious candidates on a Florida map, but Rockstar has not shown or mentioned fishing in either. not announced

What to expect from Red Dead Redemption 2

This is precedent, not a GTA 6 fact. GTA V had no fishing activity, so the comparison previews reach for is Red Dead Redemption 2 (2018). According to fan guide RDR2.org, Arthur is guaranteed a rod in the story mission "A Fisher of Men." Bait and lures were matched to the fish and the water, and you could sell a catch at the butcher, butcher it yourself for food, or throw it back, which raised your Honor.

If the reel-in is as detailed as previews say, expect Red Dead's rhythm of casting, waiting for a bite and fighting the line. The keep-and-sell half is what previews say GTA 6 drops. Whether bait, lures or rare fish carry over has not been reported.

Still unknown

• How you get a rod, and whether you can fish from a pier or the shore as well as a boat.
• Which species live in Leonida's waters, and whether any are rare.
• Whether fishing pays, unlocks anything or counts toward the reported species tracking.
• Whether Lucia fishes too. The only official screenshot shows Jason, although Engadget puts her on the water with Jason and Brian in the Extended Look.
