Is GTA 6 30 fps or 60 fps?

Officially, neither. Rockstar, Sony and Microsoft have published no frame rate, and both store listings are silent on graphics modes. What exists is one secondhand account and one piece of footage analysis, and they agree.

The account comes from YouTuber Davy Jones, who visited Rockstar North. He said Rob Nelson, co-studio head at Rockstar North, told visitors the consoles were running the game at 30 fps during development, and that a 60 fps option, at launch or later, was a question for the technical team. Flow Games covered it first and Kotaku reported it on August 27, 2026. reported Nelson did not rule a 60 fps mode in or out. Some headlines turned this into "30 fps confirmed". It is not: it is a paraphrase of a studio visit, not a Rockstar statement. Our 30 fps news post has the full story.

What the Extended Look showed

Rockstar says the 26-minute Extended Look was captured on a PlayStation 5. Digital Foundry's analysis, as Pure Xbox (August 28, 2026) and Game Rant (August 31) report it, found reported:

  • Frame rate: a stable, well-paced 30 fps with only the odd dropped frame.
  • Resolution: a native 1440p image with a simple spatial upscale to 4K.
  • Ray tracing: ray-traced reflections, noisy and smeared in places (Pure Xbox), and ray-traced global illumination that Digital Foundry called performant despite some residual noise (Game Rant).
  • 60 fps: "extremely unlikely" on console without cutting back the world, because the CPU and GPU have little time to spare.

That is one showcase, captured months before launch. The final game can differ, but nothing Rockstar has shown so far ran above 30 fps.

PS5 Pro

The PlayStation Store listing carries the "PS5 Pro Enhanced" label, checked again on September 26, 2026. official Sony uses it for games with Pro-specific improvements, which can mean a sharper image, better ray tracing, a higher frame rate or a mix. Nobody has said which applies here. Sony's Pro upgrade is mostly on the graphics side, and Digital Foundry pointed at the CPU as a big part of the 30 fps limit, so a cleaner 4K image looks likelier than extra frames. That is our reading. Any claim of a 40 fps or 60 fps Pro mode is a rumor until Rockstar or Sony says so. rumor More on GTA 6 on PS5 Pro.

Xbox Series X and Series S

One Microsoft Store listing covers both consoles, marked "Optimized for Xbox Series X|S", with no frame rate or modes. official The Series S has essentially the same CPU as the Series X, so if the CPU sets the 30 fps ceiling, the Series S can plausibly hold the same target at a lower resolution. That is our expectation, based on how Rockstar treated the weakest console last time (below). The storage math and precedent are on GTA 6 on Xbox Series S.

What Rockstar's last games did at launch

Game and consolesWhat it ran atSource
GTA V on PS4 and Xbox One (2014)1080p on both, targeting 30 fps with occasional dipsDigital Foundry reported
Red Dead Redemption 2 on PS4, PS4 Pro, Xbox One S and Xbox One X (2018)30 fps on all four. Resolution ranged from 864p on Xbox One S to native 4K on Xbox One X; PS4 Pro reconstructed 4K from 1920x2160Digital Foundry reported
GTA V on PS5 and Xbox Series X (2022)Three modes: Fidelity (native 4K with ray tracing, targeting 30 fps), Performance (upscaled 4K, targeting 60 fps) and Performance RT (upscaled 4K with ray tracing, targeting 60 fps)Rockstar Newswire official
GTA V on Xbox Series S (2022)Fidelity (upscaled 4K, targeting 30 fps) and Performance (1080p, targeting 60 fps); no Performance RT modeRockstar Newswire official

The pattern: each new Rockstar open world launched at 30 fps on consoles, and the mid-generation machines got a sharper picture, not more frames. The 60 fps modes came when a 2013 game was brought to much stronger 2020 hardware. GTA 6 is a new game built for current consoles, which is why a 30 fps launch would fit the record. It would not rule out a performance mode later, and Nelson reportedly left that open.

Will there be a performance mode or 60 fps patch?

Unknown. not announced No performance mode, no 60 fps option, no VRR support and no 120 Hz output has been announced for any console. By Jones's account, Nelson treated 60 fps as a question for Rockstar's technical team both for launch and for later. Anything firmer than that, in either direction, is guesswork.

When we will know

  • September 29: Game Informer's cover story. Game Informer says the digital issue has a 14-page GTA 6 story built on interviews with several lead designers at Rockstar. Game Informer's announced topics are weather, wildlife and Rockstar's Florida research, not performance, so do not expect a frame-rate answer there. See the Game Informer cover story.
  • A graphics modes post. Rockstar listed GTA V's PS5 and Xbox Series modes on Newswire on March 4, 2022, eleven days before its March 15 launch. The same gap would mean early November for GTA 6. That is precedent, not a date.
  • Pre-load on November 12. Store pages sometimes gain feature details around pre-load.
  • Launch analysis. Digital Foundry usually compares every console within days of release. We will add confirmed modes and measured results to this page when they exist.

Frequently asked questions

Will GTA 6 be 60 fps?

Not announced for any console. The only report says the consoles ran the game at 30 fps during development, and that a 60 fps option was a question for Rockstar's technical team, according to YouTuber Davy Jones's account of what Rob Nelson told studio visitors (reported by Kotaku, August 27, 2026).

Is GTA 6 30 fps confirmed?

No. Rockstar has published no frame rate. The 30 fps figure is a reported, secondhand account of a studio visit, and Digital Foundry measured the Extended Look at a stable 30 fps. Both point the same way, but neither is an official spec.

Will GTA 6 have a performance mode?

Nobody knows yet. No graphics modes have been announced for PS5, PS5 Pro or Xbox Series X|S, and neither store listing mentions any. For GTA V on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, Rockstar announced its modes on Newswire eleven days before launch.

Does GTA 6 run at 60 fps on PS5 Pro?

Not announced. The PlayStation Store listing shows a "PS5 Pro Enhanced" label, but Sony and Rockstar have not said what it adds. Claims of a 40 fps or 60 fps Pro mode are rumors until Rockstar or Sony says otherwise.

What resolution does GTA 6 run at on PS5?

Not announced. Digital Foundry measured the Extended Look, which Rockstar says was captured on PS5, at a native 1440p upscaled to 4K. That is reported analysis of one piece of footage, not a launch spec.

Does GTA 6 have ray tracing?

Digital Foundry reported ray-traced reflections and ray-traced global illumination in the Extended Look footage, as Pure Xbox and Game Rant relay its analysis. Rockstar has not published a feature list, so whether ray tracing is on in every mode, or on every console, is unknown.

What changed on this page

  • Added Game Rant as the source for Digital Foundry's ray-traced global illumination finding, since Pure Xbox mentions only the reflections, and corrected the Extended Look's length to 26 minutes (Rockstar's upload runs 26:48).
  • Page created: frame rate, resolution and ray tracing status for PS5, PS5 Pro, Series X and Series S, with Rockstar's launch record for GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2.
