What is confirmed for Series S

There is one Xbox version of GTA 6, and it covers both consoles. The Microsoft Store listing says "Play with Xbox Series X|S" and "Optimized for Xbox Series X|S", lists single player, and shows no Series S exclusions. Series S owners pay the same $79.99 or $99.99, get the same Vintage Vice City Pack, and get the free GTA+ month on digital pre-orders, just like Series X owners.

What the listing does not show is a file size, a resolution, a frame rate or a graphics mode. Rockstar has published those for no console. The main Xbox page covers Game Pass, GTA+ and pre-ordering; this page is about the hardware.

Storage math: 512 GB and 1 TB

This is the question Series S owners actually face. Rockstar has not announced an install size, and no store lists one. The 150 to 200 GB range you see everywhere is a rumor. For scale, Red Dead Redemption 2's PC version asked for 150 GB.

ConsoleUsable space (approx.)Left if GTA 6 is 150 GBLeft if GTA 6 is 200 GB
Series S 512 GB364 GB214 GB164 GB
Series S 1 TBAbout 800 GBAbout 650 GBAbout 600 GB
Series X 1 TB (for comparison)802 GB652 GB602 GB

Microsoft does not publish usable space. The 364 GB and 802 GB figures are GamesRadar's (November 4, 2020), and TechRadar's review of the 1 TB Series S (November 8, 2024) puts that model at roughly 800 GB. Those "left over" numbers assume an empty drive. System files, other games and future GTA 6 patches all eat into them. Two rules from Microsoft decide your plan:

  1. Optimized games must run from fast storage. Microsoft says Optimized for Xbox Series X|S games have to be installed on the internal SSD or a Storage Expansion Card to play. official
  2. USB drives can hold games but not run them. A USB 3.0 drive of 128 GB or more can store Series X|S games, and moving a game back is faster than downloading it again.

So on a 512 GB Series S, the cheap move is to shift your other Series games to a USB drive before pre-load opens on November 12 and leave the internal SSD for GTA 6. How to free up storage for GTA 6 has the steps. The only way to add playable space is an official Storage Expansion Card: Seagate lists them from 1 TB to 4 TB, and SanDisk sells its Optimus GX C50 in 1 TB and 2 TB. We have not tested a card; by its listing, the C50 is officially licensed for Xbox Series X|S and games play directly from it. A 2 TB card gives a 512 GB Series S several times its built-in usable space.

Ignore the 676.7 GB "listing". That screenshot was a doctored image posted on X on December 24, 2025 and recycled by a parody account in June 2026, and it even claimed Xbox One support. It would not even fit on a 512 GB Series S, and it was never real. The GTA 6 file size page explains the hoax and will carry the official number as soon as a store shows it.

Resolution and frame rate: what to expect

Nothing here is announced. What follows is our expectation, built from Microsoft's published specs, the one frame-rate report and Rockstar's own history. For what is reported on every console, see GTA 6 frame rate on PS5, Pro and Xbox.

Spec (Microsoft)Series SSeries X
GPU4 teraflops, 20 compute units12 teraflops, 52 compute units
Memory10 GB (8 GB fast, 2 GB slow)16 GB
CPU8-core custom Zen 2, same design as Series X8-core custom Zen 2
Design target1440p, up to 120 fps4K, up to 120 fps
  • Frame rate: probably the same 30 fps. According to YouTuber Davy Jones, Rob Nelson, co-studio head at Rockstar North, told visitors the consoles were running the game at 30 fps during development, with 60 fps a question for the technical team (Kotaku, August 27, 2026). reported Digital Foundry pointed at the CPU as much as the GPU, and the Series S has essentially the same CPU as the Series X. If the big consoles hold 30, the Series S can plausibly hold 30 too.
  • Resolution: lower. Digital Foundry measured the Extended Look at a native 1440p on PS5, upscaled to 4K. With about a third of the Series X's GPU power, the Series S will almost certainly render well below that and upscale to 1080p or 1440p.
  • Settings: trimmed. Expect ray tracing to be reduced or removed and some draw distance and foliage scaled back. The 10 GB of memory is the Series S's tightest limit in big open worlds.

Precedent: how Rockstar has treated the weakest console

GameWeakest consoleWhat it got
Red Dead Redemption 2 (2018)Xbox One S864p at 30 fps, against native 4K at 30 fps on Xbox One X, per Digital Foundry. Same frame rate, much lower resolution.
GTA V for PS5 and Xbox Series (2022)Xbox Series SFidelity mode: upscaled 4K at 30 fps, while PS5 and Series X got native 4K with ray tracing. Performance mode: 1080p at 60 fps. No Performance RT mode, which the other two consoles got. Source: Rockstar Newswire, March 4, 2022.

The pattern is consistent: same game, same content, same frame-rate target, lower resolution and fewer ray-traced effects on the smallest box. GTA V was a 2013 game on 2020 hardware, so it had room for a 60 fps mode that GTA 6 may not.

Series S or Series X for GTA 6?

If you already own a Series S, it will play GTA 6 on day one. Spend on storage before you spend on a new console. If you are buying, the Series S is no longer the bargain it was: on September 28, 2026, xbox.com listed the 512 GB model at $499.99 and the 1 TB model at $599.99, unchanged since September 23. At those prices, compare it with the Series X, which xbox.com listed the same day at $749.99 (1 TB, all-digital), or a PS5 at $599.00 to $649.00 on PlayStation Direct, before deciding. The $799.99 Series X with a disc drive was still marked sold out on xbox.com on September 28, and GTA 6 does not need a disc anyway: the boxed copy is a download code. The known differences are resolution and storage, not content. The best console for GTA 6 puts all four consoles side by side, and GTA 6 on PS5 Pro covers the other end of the hardware range.

If you settle on a Series S, the 1 TB model is the one to get for GTA 6: about 800 GB usable against about 364 GB, which leaves room for other games and future patches. If you want the Series X, the all-digital version plays the boxed copy.

What to watch for

  • The install size on the Microsoft Store listing, usually visible around pre-load. Pre-load opens November 12.
  • Graphics modes on Rockstar Newswire. For GTA V's current-gen launch, Rockstar posted the Series S modes eleven days ahead.
  • Digital Foundry's launch comparison, which usually tests Series S alongside Series X and PS5 within days of release.

Where to buy

More room for your Series S

Amazon

The 512 GB Series S has the least free space of any console. An expansion card adds 1 or 2 TB that Series X|S games play from, and the 1 TB Series S doubles the built-in drive.

Amazon's Pre-order Price Guarantee: "the price we charge when we ship it to you will be the lowest price offered by Amazon.com between the time you placed your order and the end of the day of the release date." Amazon's help page adds that it "does not apply to lower prices offered through any program that requires a customer to join the program to receive the lower price." Amazon's release date for the GTA VI boxes is November 12.

Frequently asked questions

Is GTA 6 on Xbox Series S?

Yes. GTA 6 launches on Xbox Series S and Series X on November 19, 2026, from one Microsoft Store listing marked "Optimized for Xbox Series X|S". The price and pre-order bonuses are the same on both consoles.

Will GTA 6 fit on a 512 GB Xbox Series S?

Probably, but with little room left. The 512 GB model has about 364 GB usable. Rockstar has not announced an install size; if the rumored 150 to 200 GB range is right, GTA 6 alone takes 41 to 55 percent of that space.

What resolution will GTA 6 run at on Series S?

Not announced. Microsoft designed the Series S around a 1440p target, and the base PS5 footage Digital Foundry measured was already 1440p upscaled to 4K. Expect the Series S to run at a lower resolution than that. That is our expectation, not a Rockstar figure.

Is GTA 6 60 fps on Series S?

Not announced, and unlikely. According to YouTuber Davy Jones, Rob Nelson, co-studio head at Rockstar North, said the consoles ran the game at 30 fps during development. The Series S has nearly the same CPU as the Series X, so a 30 fps target on Series S is the reasonable expectation.

Can I play GTA 6 from a USB drive on Series S?

You can store it on one but not play it from one. Microsoft says Optimized for Xbox Series X|S games must be installed on the internal SSD or a Storage Expansion Card to play. Move other games to USB instead and keep the internal drive for GTA 6.

Does the GTA 6 physical edition work on an all-digital Series S?

Yes. The boxed GTA 6 is a download code with no disc, so the disc-less Series S can use it. Physical copies do not include the free GTA+ month that digital pre-orders get.
