The two confirmed platforms
Rockstar's official site lists exactly two platforms: PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Pre-orders opened on the PlayStation Store and the Microsoft Store on June 25, 2026, and the physical edition (a download code in a box) is sold for both consoles. That has not changed since Trailer 1 in December 2023.
Performance is the open question. According to YouTuber Davy Jones, who visited Rockstar North, co-studio head Rob Nelson said the consoles were running the game at 30 fps during development and that a 60 fps option was a question for the technical team reported. No performance mode, resolution target or Series S compromise has been announced. GTA 6 frame rate on PS5, Pro and Xbox sets the report next to Digital Foundry's Extended Look analysis and Rockstar's launch record, console by console. GTA 6 on PS5 and GTA 6 on Xbox cover what each store listing says.
PS5 Pro and Xbox Series S
The PS5 Pro runs the same PS5 game. Sony's listing adds a "PS5 Pro Enhanced" badge, which means the game is tuned for the Pro in some way, though Rockstar has not said how; see GTA 6 on PS5 Pro. The Series S gets the game on the same day as the Series X, with the smaller 512 GB drive as the practical worry because the install size is unannounced; see GTA 6 on Xbox Series S.
PC: not announced, expected eventually
No PC version has been announced. The expectation comes from Rockstar's record: GTA IV reached PC about 7 months after consoles, Red Dead Redemption 2 about 12 and GTA V about 19.
Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick told shareholders on September 17, 2026 that PC is "more and more important" to the company. That is a hint, not an announcement. The GTA 6 on PC tracker has the full history and a realistic window, GTA 6 mods covers Rockstar's mod guidelines dated September 10, 2026, and the GTA 6 PC requirements page explains why every spec sheet you have seen is invented.
Nintendo Switch 2: a rumor about tests
The Switch 2 story rests on two insiders. NateTheHate said he had heard Rockstar was testing the game on the hardware, added that tests do not always lead to a release, and said he did not know where that work stands. On June 26, 2026, Nash Weedle claimed via Vice that a subcontracted port is aimed at 2027. rumor Rockstar and Nintendo have said nothing.
On September 24, 2026, Dexerto reported that Jeremy Hartvick, a former Rockstar developer who worked on GTA 6 until 2020, thinks a Switch 2 port does not make sense; that is his opinion, not inside knowledge (what he said). reported A Switch 2 version is still not announced. Given the reported 30 fps on the current consoles during development, a Switch 2 port would be a large project, so assume it does not exist until Rockstar says otherwise. The rumor trail is on GTA 6 on Switch 2.
PS4 and Xbox One: no
GTA V launched on PS3 and Xbox 360 and then jumped generations twice. GTA 6 has only ever been listed for current consoles: PlayStation's official GTA 6 page says it is not playable on PlayStation 4, and the Microsoft Store names Xbox Series X|S only. On a PS4 or Xbox One, you will need new hardware to play on November 19. The "Xbox One" in the old 676 GB file-size image was one of the clues that it was fake. More on GTA 6 on PS4 and Xbox One.
Game Pass, subscriptions and crossplay
GTA 6 is not a day-one Game Pass title, according to reporting, and nothing official says otherwise. At the September 17 shareholder meeting Zelnick said no recurrent consumer spending is anticipated for this launch, which fits a single-player game sold the traditional way.
The one subscription tie-in runs the other way. Digital pre-orders on both the PlayStation Store and the Microsoft Store include a free month of GTA+, Rockstar's membership for the existing GTA Online. PlayStation owners redeem it by March 31, 2027; Xbox owners redeem it in the Microsoft Store's Offers & Credits section within 180 days of buying. Boxed copies do not qualify. It renews at $7.99 a month, so read how to claim free GTA+ first. Crossplay is not announced because there is no online mode at launch; see GTA 6 crossplay.
Which platform should you buy it on?
If you already own one current console, buy it there. Known differences are small: the PS5 Pro Enhanced badge and the "Plays Best On PlayStation 5" marketing on one side, the smaller Series S drive on the other. None of that is a performance comparison, because no performance figures exist yet. Buying a console for it? The best console for GTA 6 compares official prices, usable storage and disc drives, and says who should pick which.

The hardware around the console
Rockstar has announced no frame rate, resolution or audio requirements beyond what each store lists, so buy for what the consoles themselves can do. not announced Our buying guides pick hardware by the makers' published specs; we have not tested any of it.
- TV or monitor: 4K, HDR and an HDMI 2.1 input rated for 4K at 120 Hz cover both consoles. See the best TV for GTA 6, which also has a monitors section.
- Headset: buy the version made for your console. PlayStation's GTA VI page lists Tempest 3D Audio official; the Microsoft Store listing names no spatial audio. See the best headset for GTA 6.
- Storage: every PS5 takes an M.2 SSD in its expansion slot, and GTA 6 can run from it. Sony's steps for each model are in how to add an SSD to PS5 for GTA 6.
- Timing: Prime Big Deal Days runs October 6-7 and Black Friday falls on November 27. GTA 6 deals lists what to check in each category, without Amazon prices.

- Check the GTA 6 release date for the countdown and what is still to come before launch.

Frequently asked questions
What platforms is GTA 6 on?
PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, from November 19, 2026. Those are the only platforms announced. No PC, PS4, Xbox One or Nintendo Switch 2 version has been announced.
Is GTA 6 coming to PC?
Not at launch, and no PC version has been announced. GTA IV, GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2 all reached PC 7 to 19 months after console. The GTA 6 PC release status tracker logs every statement.
Will GTA 6 run on PS4 or Xbox One?
No. PlayStation's official GTA 6 page says the game is not playable on PlayStation 4, and the Microsoft Store lists Xbox Series X|S only. Details on the PS4 and Xbox One page.
Is GTA 6 on Nintendo Switch 2?
Not announced. Insiders have claimed internal tests on Switch 2 hardware and a port aimed at 2027, and one added that tests do not equal a release. Treat both as rumors. A former Rockstar developer who worked on GTA 6 until 2020 said in September 2026, as reported by Dexerto, that a port does not make sense to him; that is his opinion. See what the former developer said.
Will GTA 6 be on Xbox Game Pass?
Not on day one, according to reporting. Nothing official has been said about Game Pass at any point after launch.
Does GTA 6 run better on PS5 or Xbox?
Nobody outside Rockstar knows yet. The PlayStation listing carries a PS5 Pro Enhanced badge, but no frame-rate modes or resolution targets have been announced for any console. GTA 6 frame rate tracks what is reported for each one.
What changed on this page
- Added a section on the hardware around the console, linking our new buying guides to the best TV and the best headset for GTA 6 (picked from published specs; we have not tested them), a step-by-step guide to adding an SSD to a PS5, and our deals page for Prime Big Deal Days (October 6-7) and Black Friday (November 27).
- Added three new pages: GTA 6 frame rate on every console, a best-console buying guide with official prices checked September 26, and an explainer on why there is no early access. Linked each of them from the matching section below. Corrected the Switch 2 section, which named only one insider: a second insider claims a 2027 port, and a former Rockstar developer thinks a port does not make sense. The PS4 answer now credits PlayStation's official GTA 6 page, which is where the "not playable on PlayStation 4" line appears.
- Corrected the GTA+ bonus: digital pre-orders on the Microsoft Store get the free month too, so it is not a PS5 advantage, and boxed copies do not get it. The PS4 answer now quotes the "not playable on PlayStation 4" line from the PlayStation Store. Added links to the new PS5 Pro, Series S, Switch 2, last-gen, crossplay, bundles and mods pages.
