GTA 6 age rating and parents' guide: still pending, likely Mature 17+

What the stores say right now

Sony's GTA 6 page shows "ESRB Rating Pending Mature 17+" with the note that the game "May contain content inappropriate for children." The Microsoft Store listing shows "Rating Pending Likely Mature 17+" and points buyers to ESRB.org. official

That wording is the ESRB's own. Its ratings guide defines "Rating Pending, Likely Mature 17+" as a game that has "not yet assigned a final ESRB rating but anticipated to be rated Mature 17+," a label that appears only in marketing for a boxed game. So the stores are telling you what is coming, not what the ESRB has decided. A search of esrb.org on September 26, 2026 returns 42 Grand Theft Auto titles, from the older games to GTA V, but no GTA VI, and pegi.info returns no result for Grand Theft Auto VI.

Europe has store labels too. The UK and French PlayStation Store pages show "PEGI Provisional 18", and the German page shows "USK Rating Pending" (checked September 26, 2026). official Like the US "Rating Pending" badge, these tell you what the store expects. They are store labels, not a decision by PEGI or Germany's USK. We could not tell when the labels first appeared, so they may not be new.

Some fan sites already print an M rating with a full list of content descriptors, and a PEGI 18 badge. Neither board has published anything for GTA 6, so those lists are guesses built from GTA V.

What M 17+ and PEGI 18 mean

In the US the ESRB rating is industry guidance, not law; many stores enforce it voluntarily by checking ID at the till. In the UK, PEGI 18 is legally enforced at retail, and in Australia an R18+ game cannot be sold or hired to anyone under 18. Both consoles also let parents block games above a set age rating.

Australia's National Classification Database does list automated IARC ratings, from G to MA 15+, for several titles called "GTA 6" or "Grand Theft Auto VI" with no platform given. None is a Classification Board decision, and the Australian PlayStation Store and Microsoft Store listings for GTA 6 still show "Check the Classification", so we do not treat any of them as the game's rating.

Precedent: how GTA V was rated

GTA V is the closest guide to what the GTA 6 rating will say. Its ESRB entry lists seven content descriptors: Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Mature Humor, Nudity, Strong Language, Strong Sexual Content, and Use of Drugs and Alcohol. The ESRB's summary calls out gunfights with pistols, machine guns, sniper rifles and explosives, an interactive torture scene, a topless lap dance, sex acts with prostitutes that are heard rather than shown, drug use, drunk driving and strong profanity including slurs.

The descriptors are our best guide to what GTA 6 will get, not a prediction of the exact list. One difference is likely: GTA V's current rating carries "Users Interact" because of GTA Online. GTA 6 launches as a single-player game, so that element may not appear at first. That is our reading of the ESRB's rules, not an announcement.

Parents' guide: what GTA 6 shows so far

Rockstar's own trailers, the 26-minute Extended Look and the official screenshots show the same kind of content that earned GTA V its M. official

• Violence and crime. Armed store robberies, shootouts with police, and the six-star wanted level.
• Sexual content. Nightclub and strip club scenes, including the Jack of Hearts club run by Boobie Ike.
• Alcohol and partying. Drinking, bars, clubs and boat parties in Vice City and the Keys.

The story follows two criminals, Jason and Lucia, and Trailer 1 introduces Lucia in prison. Nothing shown so far suggests a softer game than GTA V.

Parents' guide: online, spending and console controls

• It is an adult game. Treat GTA 6 as you would GTA V until the final rating lands. The expected M and 18 are the highest ratings mainstream console games get.
• No online play at launch. The PlayStation listing says "1 player" and "Offline play enabled", and Take-Two calls the November 19 release a single-player launch. official There is no voice or text chat with strangers in the game at launch. See GTA 6 Online for what may come later.
• The store shows a purchases label. Sony's listing carries its standard "In-game purchases optional" line. Take-Two says it anticipates no recurrent consumer spending for this launch, so no in-game store has been announced. The Ultimate Edition upgrade costs $20 and is bought on the store, not in the game. official The free GTA+ month that comes with digital pre-orders is for GTA Online, and the Microsoft Store says child accounts with restrictions on age-restricted content cannot redeem it.
• Console controls work. PS5 Family Management and the Xbox Family Settings app can block games above an age rating, set spending limits and cap play time. Check those settings again once the final rating is published.
• ID checks are a platform matter. PlayStation in the UK and Ireland, and Xbox in the UK, now ask adult accounts to verify their age to keep chat features. Our GTA 6 age verification page separates the real rules from the rumors.

When the final rating should appear

Neither board announces dates. What we know: the boxed copy, a download code in a box, becomes available to ship and pick up from November 12, 2026, one week before the November 19 release. official The ESRB's "Rating Pending" labels are for marketing a boxed game before it is rated, which implies the box itself will carry a final rating. So we expect the ESRB entry, and a PEGI entry for Europe, before November 12. That is our reading, not a Rockstar date.

What to watch: a new "Grand Theft Auto VI" entry on esrb.org or pegi.info, and the store labels changing from "Rating Pending" and "PEGI Provisional 18" to a final rating. We update this page when any of them change. For the boxed copy itself, see the GTA 6 physical edition.

Will some countries get a cut version?

Not announced. Rockstar has said nothing about different content in any country. On September 25, 2026 Notebookcheck reported that a fan had spotted region codes for the boxed PS5 version in the Rockstar Store's backend, and speculated that regional editions may cut content. rumor Region codes may only reflect packaging and local rating labels (our reading); the codes themselves say nothing about content.
