Watson Bay is an official town name in GTA 6, but Rockstar has said almost nothing about it. Rockstar’s text mentions it only in Ultimate Edition copy for the Dominator Buggy: store the ‘67 Vapid Dominator Buggy at the Paradise Garage in Watson Bay, “which features a weapon locker plus a secure place to deposit stolen goods to be fenced.”
Everything else on this page is either what an official screenshot shows or what the community has worked out, and we label which is which.
The screenshot
One of Rockstar’s Grassrivers screenshots, the image at the top of this page, shows a town built out over green water: two- and three-story buildings on pilings, restaurant decks, a speedboat heading in and a water tower above the rooftops. A large city skyline stands on the horizon.
The tower’s lettering is partly hidden, but the first letters, W-A-T, are legible when you zoom in. Community wikis read it as Watson Bay. Rockstar did not caption the shot, so the picture is official and the identification is a community reading. The skyline fits the community placement near Vice City, which is our reading too.
Where it is
Community wikis put Watson Bay southwest of Vice City, near the southwestern tip of the mainland, in Mariana County. The county name comes from a community reading of an Interstate 404 sign in Trailer 2 (about 2:28), and Rockstar names no county for Watson Bay. The Dominator Buggy is pitched for “the backwoods of Mount Kalaga and beyond,” at the other end of the state. If the community placement is right, you will drive it a long way before it gets muddy.
Real-world inspiration
Community wikis call Watson Bay a close rendition of Cedar Key, a Gulf Coast fishing village in Levy County known for clam farming, with “nearly identical structures and layout.” Its position on the map matches Everglades City and Chokoloskee instead, the old fishing towns on the Everglades’ Gulf edge. Both are fan identifications.
The name looks like a nod to Edgar J. Watson, who farmed at Chatham Bend near Chokoloskee, made syrup from sugar cane, and was suspected of several murders. In October 1910, days after a hurricane hit the area, a crowd met him at the Chokoloskee landing and killed him. Peter Matthiessen retold the story in Shadow Country. No. Fans match its buildings to Cedar Key, a Gulf Coast fishing village, and its name to Edgar J. Watson, a Chokoloskee-area planter killed by a crowd of his neighbors in October 1910. Rockstar has not confirmed either.
