This page explains how the economy works. For ways to earn, ranked, read how to make money in GTA 6.
The three kinds of money
| Type | Where it lives | Risk | How you get it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cash | In your pocket | Lost if you die or get arrested | Robberies, jobs, selling to fences |
| Bank | A joint account for Jason and Lucia, run through the BuckMe app | Safe | Deposit cash at an ATM |
| Goods | Duffel bags of stolen items | Worthless until sold; fate on death not reported | Robberies, from convenience stores to jewelry stores and banks |
Two money readouts are visible at the top right of the screen in the Extended Look, which recaps read as bank and cash, and the weapon wheel carries the Health, Stamina and Focus bars. official The rules about losing cash come from the July 2026 previews, not from anything shown on screen. reported
Why ATMs matter now
In GTA V's story mode your money was one balance, and dying cost you a hospital bill. GTA 6 makes you carry it. Rob Nelson told Famitsu you risk losing your cash if you end up Wasted or Busted, and Vice's preview report says cash has to be physically deposited at an ATM. reported So the real end of a robbery is the ATM, and a getaway that ends at one is worth more than a shootout that ends in a hospital.
Money also matters to the story. Vice reports that it can temporarily gate story progress, which pushes you toward robberies when funds run low. reported
Loot, fences and stolen cars
Store robberies in the Extended Look end with a bag, not a number. official Cash from the register is cash; everything else sits in a duffel bag until a fence buys it. Rockstar's June 24 press copy for the pre-order garage, as TheSixthAxis reprinted it, describes "the local Fence, who will accept most stolen goods at a reasonably discounted rate," and says every personal garage in Leonida has a secure place to drop goods for them. reported The shorter text on rockstargames.com today says only that the edition garages have "a secure place to deposit stolen goods to be fenced." official
Previews add detail. Some fences specialize: Vice lists cars, drugs and jewelry, and GTABase, a fan database, adds marked cash and contraband (rumor). Fences unlock as the story goes on, so you can end up holding goods before you know anyone who will buy them. How many bags you can carry depends on the vehicle: a bike holds almost nothing, while cars, vans and trucks hold more. reported
Cars have their own market. The WAINK app scans a parked car for its value and security. official Damage lowers the price, a registration fee makes a stolen car legally yours, and progress with car fences unlocks tracker removal and the key cloner. reported The routine is in how to steal cars in GTA 6.
What money buys
- Garages. reported Purchasable, and they raise how many personal vehicles you can keep. Rockstar's edition copy gives the Shore Court and Paradise garages a weapon locker and a drop for stolen goods, and the longer June 24 press copy says every personal garage has both. More on GTA 6 properties.
- Safehouses. reported Not for sale. Rob Nelson told Famitsu the hideouts change as the chapters advance.
- Car work. reported Pay 'n' Spray repairs and recolors a car and clears its vehicle heat; mod shops go further. Both help with the car icon on your wanted level.
- Clothes, hair and tattoos. official Stores, salons and tattoo parlors appear in the footage and the edition content.
- Weapons. official Ammu-Nation is back: Trailer 2 includes a TV ad for Phil's Ammu-Nation. See the GTA 6 weapons list.
- Food and drink. official Meals and drinks such as Blitz Smoothies and Protein Shakes move your stat bars.
Edition items and the economy
The $99.99 Ultimate Edition adds vehicles, the Paradise Garage, shops and outfits, but Rockstar says they are threaded through the story rather than handed over on day one. There is no early access and no in-game currency pack, and the $20 upgrade can be bought any time. The full list is on the GTA 6 editions page.
Still unknown
- How much cash you lose on arrest compared with death.
- Whether the duffel bag of goods survives a death or an arrest.
- Whether businesses can be bought as income, the way GTA V's could.
- Starting balance, mission payouts and fence prices.
- What the economy looks like once the story ends.

Frequently asked questions
Do you lose money when you die in GTA 6?
You lose the cash you are carrying, whether you die or get arrested: Rob Nelson told Famitsu so, and Vice's preview report says cash can be lost on death. Money deposited at an ATM into the bank is safe, so bank a big haul before you take more risks. What happens to a duffel bag of goods has not been reported.
Do Jason and Lucia share money in GTA 6?
Yes, per previews. They share one bank account, managed through the BuckMe app. Cash goes into the account only at an ATM, not through the phone.
Can you buy houses in GTA 6?
Not safehouses. Previews say the story hands those to you and they change by chapter, because Jason and Lucia are on the run. Garages can be bought. The Ultimate Edition adds the Paradise Garage in Watson Bay and the pre-order bonus adds the Shore Court Garage near Ocean Beach.
Are there microtransactions in GTA 6 single player?
None are announced. Take-Two said on September 17, 2026 that it anticipates no recurrent consumer spending for this launch, and the game launches single-player only. Edition items arrive through story progress, not purchases.
What is a fence in GTA 6?
A buyer for stolen goods. Rockstar's June 24 press copy for the pre-order garage, as TheSixthAxis reprinted it, describes "the local Fence, who will accept most stolen goods at a reasonably discounted rate." Previews add that some fences specialize: Vice names cars, drugs and jewelry, and GTABase, a fan database, adds marked cash. Fences unlock through the story.
What changed on this page
- Quoted Rockstar's own description of fences, corrected the fence types and the Phil's Ammu-Nation reference, marked what happens to the duffel bag on death as not reported, and removed an unsourced line about bank jobs paying in marked bills; credited the cash-loss rule to Rob Nelson and Vice instead of GTABase, and noted that the Fence quote comes from the longer June 24 press copy, not today's rockstargames.com text, so that wording is tagged reported.
