Everything here comes from Rockstar staff interviews, the Extended Look of August 27, 2026 and the hands-off previews held in July. Nobody outside Rockstar has played the game, so the details will be checked on November 19. For the step-by-step version, read how to go on a date in GTA 6.
What Rockstar has said
Rockstar pitches the whole game around the couple. Rupert Humphries, Rockstar's senior vice president of narrative, described it to Dazed as "a Bonnie and Clyde-type narrative," and Dazed wrote that player choices can carry repercussions that cut deeper than the honor systems in Rockstar's earlier games. reported
Rob Nelson, co-studio head at Rockstar North, drew the line most clearly in his Famitsu interview: whether Jason and Lucia face the story together as a couple or simply as accomplices is up to the player. reported The partnership is fixed. The romance is not.
What the Extended Look shows
The Extended Look never explains the system, but a few pieces of it are on screen. official What they mean is partly our reading, and the table says which is which.
| Moment | What is on screen | What it tells us |
|---|---|---|
| Walking to meet Brian and Lori Heder | A "Hold Hands" option as the pair walk toward them (spotted by Postmode) | Affection is an input you choose, not a cutscene |
| The character wheel | A heart symbol between the Jason and Lucia portraits | Postmode reads it as the state of their bond; Rockstar has not explained it |
| The Effluvia meeting | Brian says his contact wants to employ only one of the pair (per the gta.wiki synopsis) | A story beat that splits the couple; whether it moves the relationship state is unknown |
| On the road | Jason drives while Lucia scrolls her phone; text threads between the two appear on the phone | Previews list texting as one of the ways the bond grows |
What previews reported
The detail comes from YouTuber TGG, who watched about three hours of play, and the other July preview sessions. reported
| Detail | Source |
|---|---|
| The relationship uses states instead of a meter, like the Criminal Profile | TGG, via Vice (September 1) |
| A Jason and Lucia menu shows both characters, their Criminal Profiles and their relationship status | TGG, via Vice (September 1) |
| You can check a status for their relationship in the game, alongside the bank balance | Rob Nelson, Famitsu |
| You decide whether they stay lovers, stay friends as partners in crime, or let the romance drift by ignoring it | TGG, via Vice (September 1) |
| No predefined dates: you invite the other character to an open-world activity | TGG, via Vice (September 1) |
| Named date activities: the zoo, kayaking and beach walks | TGG, via Vice (September 1) |
| Visiting the gym together can become an emergent date, with the other character exercising alongside you | TGG and TroisCouleurs, via Vice (September 5) |
| They can text, say goodnight, hold hands and walk arm in arm | Vice (September 5) |
| A deeper bond unlocks holding hands and kissing; neglect takes those options away, and effort restores the relationship | Rob Nelson, Famitsu |
| Messages and small gestures, such as holding hands and opening doors, feed the relationship | IGN's preview, via KeenGamer (August 28) |
| Ignoring the romance never removes either protagonist | TGG, via Vice (September 1) |
| Relationship choices may affect how parts of the story unfold | TGG, via Vice (September 1) |
GTABase, a fan database, adds two details no outlet has repeated: holding hands is on the right trigger, and ignored messages wear the bond down. We treat those as rumor. rumor
Does it change the ending?
Possibly, but nobody has said so directly. Vice's preview report says your relationship choices may change how parts of the story unfold, and Dazed wrote that choices can carry repercussions deeper than Rockstar's old honor systems. reported Neither says the ending changes, and the number of endings is not announced. not announced Red Bull's Extended Look recap does say Rockstar tied the relationship to the ending, but it names no interview or statement, and we could not find Rockstar saying it anywhere, so we do not count it.
Rockstar has done both kinds of ending before. GTA V ended on a single choice between three final missions. Red Dead Redemption 2 changed its closing scenes depending on Arthur's honor. A relationship that moves between states is closer to the Red Dead model, though that is our reading, not something Rockstar has said.
How to build it
- Get them together. Invite the other character along, or swap to them on the character switch wheel. Nelson told Famitsu that whichever character you are not controlling follows their own daily schedule around the hideout, so the other one is not frozen while you are away.
- Do something. The zoo, kayaking and the beach are the dates Vice's first preview report named, and its later roundup says a gym visit together can become one too. The full list of things to do is on GTA 6 activities.
- Hold hands. The option appears in the Extended Look, and Nelson says it opens up as the bond deepens. GTABase, a fan database, puts it on the right trigger (R2 on PS5); no outlet or footage has confirmed the button. The running list of reported inputs is on GTA 6 controls.
- Keep in touch. IGN's preview, as KeenGamer summarized it, counts messages toward the relationship, and Vice says the romance drifts if you ignore it.
Relationship vs Criminal Profile
GTA 6 tracks two different things about the couple, and both use states rather than bars. reported
| Relationship | Criminal Profile | |
|---|---|---|
| Tracks | How close Jason and Lucia are | How each of them commits crimes |
| Shared or separate | One bond between the two | Separate for Jason and for Lucia |
| Moves with | Time together, texts, affection | Violence, professionalism, extreme acts |
| Can it be permanent | Not described; effort can rebuild it | Yes, a cracked or shattered profile stays for that playthrough |
| Effect | Parts of the story | Some story elements and how Vice City reacts |
The full breakdown of the second system is on the Criminal Profile page.
Still unknown
- How many relationship states there are, and what they are called.
- How much jobs done together count toward the bond. KeenGamer's summary of IGN's preview lists robberies among the things that bring the pair closer, and GTABase's recap names robberies too, but neither says how much they weigh against dates.
- Whether the romance can end for good, or only cool off.
- Whether story beats, like Brian's contact wanting only one of the pair, move the state.
- How many endings the game has.

Frequently asked questions
Can Jason and Lucia break up in GTA 6?
Not as partners. Previews say ignoring the romance never removes either character from the story. Rob Nelson told Famitsu it is up to the player whether they go through the story as a couple or simply as accomplices. Whether the romance itself can end has not been described.
Is there a relationship meter in GTA 6?
No meter to fill. TGG's preview, reported by Vice, describes a set of states instead, and the Extended Look shows a heart symbol between the two portraits on the character wheel. Vice also reports a Jason and Lucia menu that shows their relationship status, and Rob Nelson told Famitsu you can check that status in the game.
How do you go on a date in GTA 6?
There is no scripted date. You invite your partner along to an open-world activity. Vice's report on TGG's preview names the zoo, kayaking and a walk on the beach, and Vice's later roundup adds that a gym visit together can turn into an emergent date. Texting, saying goodnight and holding hands count too.
Does the relationship change the ending of GTA 6?
Possibly. Vice's preview report says relationship choices may affect how parts of the story unfold, but no preview or Rockstar statement we can source says the ending itself changes. How many endings there are has not been announced.
Can you romance other characters in GTA 6?
Nothing official or reported suggests it. Every romance detail so far, from Rockstar staff interviews and the July previews, is about Jason and Lucia.
