Rockstar's exact words
Take-Two's June 24, 2026 announcement said: "The physical version of Grand Theft Auto VI, containing a download code inside the box, will be available starting November 12, 2026 to support pre-loading." Rockstar's note to press, reported by Push Square the same day, was blunter: "Physical copies of GTAVI will contain a code that can be redeemed for the digital download of the game. A disc will not be included in the box." Rockstar has not given a reason.
What the retail box says: "No disc included"
Display boxes in shops already spell it out on the cover. Photos shared on X and reported by GAMINGbible on September 24 show a PS5 case whose front reads "Game box will contain digital download code. No disc included." The back carries the story blurb and a Vintage Vice City Pack pre-order note, and GAMINGbible, which calls it a likely retailer display box, points out that it does not mention a paper map, a staple of GTA boxes since GTA III in 2001. reported Beebom reports dummy PS5 and Xbox cases on display at Currys and Smyths in the UK and Europe, with no install size printed on them. reported
We do not show the photos, because they are not Rockstar press images. The wording matches what Rockstar has said since June. Rockstar's separate $399.99 Collector's Box includes a poster with "a full view of the Leonida map" on the back, and it ships from November 19. official As far as we can tell, that poster is the only printed map Rockstar has announced for GTA 6 (our reading).
Will GTA 6 get a disc later?
Not announced. Rockstar Support, Take-Two's June 24 release and the Rockstar Store all describe the physical version as a download code in a box, and none of them mentions a disc release. not announced Talk of a GTA 6 disc in December or in 2027 has no Rockstar, Take-Two, Sony or Microsoft statement behind it. Until a disc is announced, buy the version that exists: the code in a box or a digital copy.
Standard only in the box
Rockstar Support's editions article (updated August 18, 2026) says "a physical version of the Grand Theft Auto VI: Ultimate Edition is not available" official. If you want the Ultimate extras with a boxed copy, redeem the code, then buy the $20 Ultimate Edition Upgrade on PlayStation Store or Microsoft Store. The total is the same $99.99. What changes compared with a disc
- No offline install. Every copy is downloaded, so you need a broadband connection and room for the full game. Rockstar has not announced the size; see GTA 6 file size.
- No lending, trading or resale once redeemed. The code attaches the game to one PlayStation or Xbox account. You cannot pass the box to a friend or trade it in as a playable game.
- Opened boxes are hard to return. Most retailers will not take back a box with a visible or used code.
- Region matters on PlayStation. Rockstar says PlayStation codes only work on accounts registered in the region group they were sold for; the US and Canada share one, and the UK is its own. Xbox codes are not region-locked. Buy from a retailer in your own country.
Does the code expire?
Only one expiry date is on record. Rockstar Support says codes sold in Japan expire 170 days after launch. official It has not given an expiry for codes sold in the US, UK, Europe or anywhere else. not announced Either way, there is no reason to wait: redeem the code the day the box arrives, and the game pre-loads from November 12. What stays the same
- The game. Same Standard Edition, same story and map as a digital copy.
- The price. $79.99 list, though retailers can run their own sales.
- Pre-load. Boxes become available on November 12, the day pre-load opens. Rockstar says codes redeemed before launch pre-load from that day, so redeem it the day you get it.
Is the box worth it?
A few reasons remain: a retailer sale or trade-in credit, a gift you can wrap, or box art for the shelf. Against that, you wait for delivery, you do not get the GTA+ month, and the Rockstar Store marks its boxed pre-order offer "while supplies last." Getting it in time
Ordering early does not get the box to you before November 12. Rockstar says physical copies become available "for shipping and pickup from retailers starting on November 12," so a delivered box lands that day at the earliest and usually later. A box that turns up on November 18 still needs the whole download before you can play on the 19th. Store pickup on November 12, where a retailer offers it, is the surest way to have the code in hand when pre-load opens.
On Amazon, the delivery option you pick at checkout decides the day. Its listing says customer shipments "will begin arriving November 12 for pre-load", and Amazon offers Prime members free release-day delivery on November 12 to continental US addresses. Standard delivery can come later: for one Seattle-area address it showed November 16 when we checked on September 28, 2026. Amazon charges when it ships, and its Pre-order Price Guarantee applies. Amazon's terms: "the price we charge when we ship it to you will be the lowest price offered by Amazon.com between the time you placed your order and the end of the day of the release date." Amazon lists November 12 as that date, and its help page says lower prices from a program you have to join, such as Prime-only deals, do not count. The Rockstar Store sells the same boxed Standard Edition for $79.99 and ships to the US, Canada, the UK and 17 European countries, starting November 12. After launch, it estimates that orders ship in 1–7 days, depending on the shipping option.
Do not confuse it with the store's other box. Frequently asked questions
Does GTA 6 come on a disc?
No. Rockstar says physical copies contain a download code and that "a disc will not be included in the box." The box is the Standard Edition only, because Rockstar Support says a physical Ultimate Edition is not available, and the whole game downloads to your console.
Will GTA 6 get a disc version later?
Not announced. Rockstar and Take-Two have only ever described the physical version as a download code in a box, and neither has mentioned a disc release, so claims of a disc edition in December or in 2027 have no official source.
Does the code in the GTA 6 box expire?
Rockstar Support says codes sold in Japan expire 170 days after launch. It has not given an expiry date for codes sold anywhere else, so the safe move is to redeem the code as soon as the box arrives and pre-load from November 12.
Can I resell or lend a physical copy of GTA 6?
Not once the code is redeemed, as far as anyone can tell: a redeemed code is tied to one PlayStation or Xbox account, so a used box has nothing left to sell. An unopened, unredeemed box can be returned under the store's policy or given away.
Can I use a physical copy on a PS5 Digital Edition or Xbox Series S?
It should work. There is no disc to read, so a console without a drive redeems the code and downloads the game like any digital purchase. That is our reading of how codes work; Rockstar has not addressed it directly.
Does the physical edition include the pre-order bonus?
Yes. Rockstar Support lists the Vintage Vice City Pack as part of physical pre-orders, alongside the game code. The Rockstar Store marks its boxed offer "while supplies last." What counts is when you bought the box, not when you redeem it. Boxed copies do not get the free GTA+ month, which is for digital purchases.
