Who is Brian Heder
Brian Heder is the Keys smuggler who keeps Jason Duval housed and employed. He appears in the opening seconds of Trailer 2, stepping out of a silver pickup to talk up to Jason, who is patching a roof, and Rockstar sums him up in two lines: “Nothing better than a Mudslide at sunset,” and he “looks like a Leonida beach bum, moves like a great white shark.”
He is also the only GTA 6 character whose likely performer has spoken publicly. More on that below.
Official background
Rockstar calls Brian a classic drug runner from the golden age of smuggling in the Keys. He still moves product through his boat yard with his third wife, Lori, and has been around long enough to let others do his dirty work. Jason is one of those others: he lives rent-free in one of Brian’s properties as long as he helps with local shakedowns and stops by for Lori’s sangria once in a while. official
His line on the official site doubles as a résumé: he hauled so much grass in that plane he could make the state of Leonida levitate.
The Effluvia scene
The Extended Look’s second mission is Brian’s. official
- Jason and Lucia drive to Effluvia, a rooftop bar in Vice City (community wikis place it in Ocean Beach; Engadget says downtown), to meet Brian and Lori about a prospective client.
- Brian explains that the client wants only one of them. Engadget’s recap says the pair briefly discuss who takes the job before Lucia stands up and leaves it to Jason; the gta.wiki synopsis goes straight to Brian taking Jason to the balcony alone. reported
- On the balcony, over cigars, Brian tells Jason a story from his childhood about a fairground carousel and a friend who did not get off in time. Community transcripts spell the friend’s name Jimmy Canto. rumor
- The point, in Brian’s words: “You gotta know when to, get off, Jason, you hear me?”
It is the closest the footage comes to a character telling Jason where his story is heading.
Engadget’s recap of the video (Dave Meikleham, August 28, 2026) also describes a scene with Jason, Lucia and Brian out on the water and reads it as a nod to Red Dead Redemption 2’s fishing. reported What we know about the activity is on the fishing page.
Appearance and personality
- Look: white hair and beard, deep tan, sunglasses pushed up or on, a cap, loud island shirts and tank tops.
- Official screenshots: leaning out of his truck, at a waterfront bar in a tank top and bandana, holding a wrapped package at a gas station, and arm in arm with Lori and Jason beside his pickup.
- Temperament: easygoing on the surface and sharp underneath, exactly the beach bum and great white of his tagline.
Relationships
Lori. Third wife and partner in the business. She has her own page: Lori Heder.
Jason Duval. Tenant, errand runner and the closest thing Brian has to a protégé.
Cal Hampton. A fellow associate who, like Jason, hangs around the boat yard.
Raul Bautista. Recaps of the Extended Look say Raul comes to Jason and Lucia through Brian. Fans go further and suggest the two men were once cellmates. Nothing official says so. rumor
Notable lines
- “Nothing better than a Mudslide at sunset.” Official tagline.
- “I hauled so much grass in that plane, I could make the state of Leonida levitate.” Rockstar’s official site.
- “You gotta know when to, get off, Jason.” Effluvia, Extended Look.
Stephen Root
Stephen Root, the character actor from Office Space, NewsRadio, King of the Hill and Barry, is the one name tied to GTA 6 by the actor himself. In mid-September 2026 he told the Associated Press, “you’re gonna see me in that,” and in the quote Vice published, said that “from the very first rollout of GTA, they had my character in it,” adding that too many people knew his voice from King of the Hill. Neither quote names the character. Kotaku, Vice and Dexerto are the ones who tie him to Brian. reported Rockstar has not confirmed any cast.
Days later, Dexerto relayed a report, first posted by the fan account GTA VI O’Clock, that Rockstar had reminded performers their NDAs run until November 19. Read the full story in our Stephen Root news post.
Open questions
- What Brian’s one-person job is, and why the client wants only one of them.
- Whether the boat yard becomes a mission hub the player returns to.
- How his story ends. A man who lets others do his dirty work and warns Jason to get off in time sounds like one who plans to survive.
The islands he runs product through are in the Leonida Keys guide, and his yard has its own page: Brian’s Boat Works and Marina.

Frequently asked questions
Who is Brian Heder in GTA 6?
Brian Heder is a drug runner from the golden age of smuggling in the Leonida Keys. He still moves product through his boat yard with his third wife, Lori, and lets Jason live rent-free in one of his properties in exchange for help with local shakedowns.
Does Stephen Root play Brian Heder?
Probably, but the link to Brian comes from the press, not from Root. In mid-September 2026 he told the Associated Press "you're gonna see me in that," and Vice quoted him saying that from the very first rollout of GTA, they had his character in it. Neither quote names the role; Kotaku, Vice and others tie it to Brian Heder. Rockstar has not confirmed any cast, so we tag it reported.
Who is Lori Heder?
Brian's third wife. His official bio says she helps move product through the boat yard, and Jason is expected to stop by for her sangria. She sits beside Brian at the Effluvia rooftop bar in the Extended Look.
What does Brian tell Jason in the Extended Look?
At Effluvia he says a client wants only one of the pair for a job. Then he takes Jason out to the balcony and tells him a childhood story that ends in a warning: you gotta know when to get off.
Where is Brian's boat yard?
Brian's Boat Works and Marina is in the Leonida Keys, the island chain modeled on the Florida Keys. It appears in Trailer 2 and in the official screenshots.
What changed on this page
- Dropped a fan-site claim about Lori, retagged the Raul cellmate idea as rumor, added the Effluvia warning in Brian's own words, his official lines, look and infobox, and linked the Stephen Root news post. Also made clear that Root's quoted words do not name his role (the press ties him to Brian) and that sources disagree on where Effluvia is. Added Engadget's report of Brian on the water with Jason and Lucia. Credited Lucia leaving the Effluvia meeting to Engadget's recap instead of showing it as official, since the gta.wiki synopsis does not describe it.
