Will GTA 6 fit on my console?

Official size: not listed yet. not announced Until the PlayStation Store or Microsoft Store shows it, this checker measures your free space against the rumored 150–200 GB range rumor, so read the answer as a planning guide, not a promise.

Find it in Settings > Storage on PS5, or Settings > System > Storage devices on Xbox. Count only space the game can run from (the internal SSD, a PS5 M.2 SSD or an Xbox expansion card), not a USB drive. 1 TB is 1,000 GB.

Enter your free space in GB to see whether GTA 6 fits.

Need more room? How to free up storage for GTA 6 covers deleting and moving games to USB. If deleting is not enough, add storage the game can run from: what to buy, by console.

How the checker decides

  • 200 GB or more free: Fits, even at the top of the rumored range
  • 150 GB to just under 200 GB free: Tight: enough for the low estimate only
  • Under 150 GB free: Will not fit if the estimates hold

What Rockstar has said: nothing

Stores usually show a game's download size once the files are uploaded for pre-load. GTA 6's pre-load opens November 12, 2026. We re-checked on September 28: neither the PlayStation Store listing (which advertises a 7-day pre-load) nor the Microsoft Store listing shows a size. Rockstar's posts about pre-orders, editions and the Extended Look never mention one either, and this week's news coverage offers only estimates.

One number does sit in the data behind the Xbox page: an install size of 344,731,648 bytes, about 345 MB. The page does not display it, and it is far too small to be the game. It looks like a placeholder package for pre-orders (our reading), so do not treat it as GTA 6's size.

Where the 676 GB hoax came from

The number first went viral on X on Christmas Eve 2025. An account called @TheCanadianGTR posted an image made to look like an Xbox Store page, with a caption claiming Xbox had confirmed the "actual" file size of GTA 6: 676.7 GB. IBTimes UK and Technobezz covered the panic and the debunk within days, and the poster later made clear it had been a joke. People debunking it pointed out that the number was a "6-7" meme joke.

It came back on June 23, 2026, when @GameJoker_, an account whose bio calls it a parody source for gaming news and leaks, posted it as an Xbox "leak." Insider Gaming called it fake the next day. Neither version was ever a real store listing. The giveaways:

  • The image listed Xbox One, a console GTA 6 is not coming to. The game is announced for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S only.
  • No real store page has shown a GTA 6 size, then or now.
  • 676.7 GB is more than four times the largest Rockstar install so far (Red Dead Redemption 2 at 150 GB on PC) and far more than the roughly 364 GB a 512 GB Series S can use.

More hoaxes like this one are collected on the GTA 6 rumor tracker.

Where the 150 to 200 GB estimates come from

The estimates are extrapolation from Rockstar's own history, not a leak. GTA V asked for 65 GB when it came to PC in 2015 and has grown past 100 GB with a decade of GTA Online updates. Red Dead Redemption 2 asked for 150 GB on PC in 2019. GTA 6's map is reported to be roughly three times RDR2's playable area (see GTA 6 map size), and a full GTA radio lineup sits on top of that. A number between RDR2's 150 GB and 200 GB is a reasonable guess. It is still a guess.

How much space to free up

Plan for 200 GB free, plus a margin for the day-one update that most big launches ship with. "Usable space" is what each console leaves for games once the system software takes its share. These are measurements by the outlets linked in the table, not figures from Sony or Microsoft. The third column shows how much of that the rumored 150–200 GB range would fill.

ConsoleUsable spaceGTA 6 at 150–200 GB usesSource
PS5 (825 GB) 667 GB 22–30% PCMag, launch model, Nov 9, 2023
PS5 Digital Edition (825 GB, 2025) about 667 GB 22–30% Not published; our estimate from the launch model
PS5 Slim (1 TB) 848 GB 18–24% PCMag, Nov 9, 2023
PS5 Pro (2 TB) about 1.89 TB 8–11% Press Start, Nov 6, 2024
Xbox Series S (512 GB) 364 GB 41–55% GamesRadar, Nov 4, 2020
Xbox Series S (1 TB) about 800 GB 19–25% TechRadar, Nov 8, 2024
Xbox Series X (1 TB) 802 GB 19–25% GamesRadar, Nov 4, 2020
Xbox Series X (2 TB Galaxy Black) about 1.8 TB 8–11% Not published; our estimate

Microsoft has not given a usable figure for the 2 TB Series X, and we found no review that measured one. Our estimate assumes it keeps back the same 198 GB as the 1 TB model (1,000 GB minus 802 GB). The 825 GB PS5 figure was measured on the launch model. The current PS5 Digital Edition (sold in Europe since September 2025, per Push Square, and listed on PlayStation Direct in the US) also has an 825 GB drive, but we have not seen its usable space measured, so its row uses the launch-model figure as an estimate.

Count only space GTA 6 can run from (see external drives below). The steps for deleting and moving games are in how to free up storage for GTA 6, and Series S owners should read GTA 6 on Xbox Series S. PS5 Pro owners start with a 2 TB drive; GTA 6 on PS5 Pro covers what else the Pro changes. Physical buyers need the same space, because the physical edition is a download code, not a disc.

Can you play GTA 6 from an external drive?

Not from a USB drive. On both PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, a USB drive can store current-generation games but cannot run them, so GTA 6 has to sit on the console's own SSD or on the one kind of add-on storage each console plays games from.

ConsoleCan play GTA 6 fromCan only store it on
PS5, PS5 Slim, PS5 Pro, Digital EditionsThe built-in SSD, or an M.2 SSD fitted in the expansion slot officialA USB drive set up as extended storage
Xbox Series X and Series SThe built-in SSD, or an official Storage Expansion Card officialA USB drive

Sony's support page says PS5 games cannot be played directly from USB extended storage and have to be copied back to console storage first, while an M.2 SSD in the expansion slot can download and launch PS5 games. Sony also warns that not every M.2 drive matches the internal SSD in every game, and suggests moving a game back to internal storage if you hit problems. Microsoft says Optimized for Xbox Series X|S games must be installed on the internal SSD or a Storage Expansion Card to play, and the GTA 6 listing carries that Optimized label.

So does GTA 6 need an SSD? In practice, yes: every PS5 and Xbox Series console has one built in, and the game can only run from that SSD or the approved add-on storage in the table, never from a USB drive. PlayStation's product page says the game uses the PS5's SSD for near-instant loading. An external hard drive is still useful, just for parking your other games while GTA 6 takes the fast storage. Which drives fit each console is below.

If you need more room: what to buy

We have not tested any of these drives. The picks follow Sony's and Microsoft's published requirements and what each Amazon listing says, and each was sold by Amazon.com itself when we checked on September 28, 2026.

  • PS5, PS5 Slim or PS5 Pro: an M.2 SSD with a heatsink. Sony asks for a PCIe Gen4 M.2 NVMe drive from 250 GB to 8 TB and recommends 5,500 MB/s or faster. The SanDisk Optimus GX PRO 850P is sold as officially licensed for PS5 and PS5 Pro, comes with a heatsink made for the console and lists reads up to 7,300 MB/s. The 2 TB size leaves room for GTA 6 and the rest of your library. Fitting one takes a screwdriver and a system update: how to add an SSD to a PS5 for GTA 6. SanDisk 850P 2 TB for PS5
  • Xbox Series X or Series S: an official Storage Expansion Card. It is the only add-on storage a Series X|S game can run from. The SanDisk Optimus GX C50 is officially licensed for Xbox Series X|S, per its listing, and plugs into the back of the console with no tools. C50 card, 2 TBC50 card, 1 TB
  • Buying a Series S anyway? The 1 TB model. It has about 800 GB usable against about 364 GB on the 512 GB model (see the table above), and both models play GTA 6. Series S 1 TB
  • For parking other games: a USB drive. The Seagate Game Drive for PlayStation (5 TB) is officially licensed for PlayStation and works with PS5 and PS4, per its listing. It stores PS5 games but cannot run them, so GTA 6 still needs the internal SSD or an M.2 drive. PS4 games play straight from it. Seagate Game Drive 5 TB

How long will GTA 6 take to download?

Nobody can say exactly, because the size is not announced. The table is our math for three sizes: 100 GB as a floor, and 150 and 200 GB, the ends of the rumored range. None of them is a Rockstar figure. It assumes your full line speed the whole way, with 1 GB counted as 8,000 megabits.

Connection100 GB150 GB200 GB
25 Mbps 8 h 53 min13 h 20 min17 h 47 min
50 Mbps 4 h 27 min6 h 40 min8 h 53 min
100 Mbps 2 h 13 min3 h 20 min4 h 27 min
300 Mbps 44 min1 h 7 min1 h 29 min
500 Mbps 27 min40 min53 min
1 Gbps 13 min20 min27 min

Treat those as best cases. Wi-Fi, other devices on the connection and busy servers all slow a download, and pre-load week will be busy. The fix is time: pre-load opens November 12, a week before launch, so even a slow line has days to finish. On PS5, starting the download (pre-load included) ends your right to cancel the pre-order, so read how to cancel and refund a GTA 6 pre-order first if you are unsure. Then follow how to pre-load GTA 6.

When the real number arrives

Expect the size to appear on the stores when pre-load opens on November 12, or in a Rockstar support article shortly before. We will replace the estimates here with the official figure the day it exists, switch the checker over to it and log the change below. The pre-load guide will carry the same number, and the GTA 6 release date page tracks everything else still to come before launch.

Quick test for any file-size claim: if it does not link to a PlayStation Store page, a Microsoft Store page or a Rockstar post that you can open yourself, it is not confirmed.

Frequently asked questions

How many GB is GTA 6?

Not announced. Neither the PlayStation Store nor the Microsoft Store listing shows a size as of September 28, 2026, and Rockstar has not posted one. Community estimates of 150 to 200 GB are unconfirmed.

Is GTA 6 really 676 GB?

No. The 676.7 GB figure came from a doctored image of an Xbox Store page posted on X on December 24, 2025, and a parody account recycled it in June 2026. It even listed Xbox One, a console GTA 6 is not coming to. It was never a real store listing.

Can I play GTA 6 from an external hard drive?

Not from a USB drive. Sony says PS5 games cannot be played from USB extended storage, and Microsoft says Optimized for Xbox Series X|S games must be installed on the internal SSD or a Storage Expansion Card to play. The only add-on storage GTA 6 can run from is an M.2 SSD in a PS5 or an official expansion card on Xbox.

How long will GTA 6 take to download?

It depends on the final size, which is not announced. By our math at full line speed, 150 GB takes about 3 hours 20 minutes on 100 Mbps and about 6 hours 40 minutes on 50 Mbps. Real downloads are often slower, so start the pre-load soon after it opens on November 12.

When will the GTA 6 file size be announced?

Most likely when pre-load opens on November 12, 2026, or shortly before, because stores show the download size once the files are available. We will update this page the same day.

What changed on this page

  • Re-checked the stores on September 28: still no official size. Added what to buy if you need more room, chosen by Sony's and Microsoft's published requirements: an M.2 SSD with a heatsink for PS5, an expansion card for Xbox, and a USB drive only for parking other games.
  • Re-checked the stores on September 26: still no official size. Added whether you can play GTA 6 from an external drive, a download-time table for common connection speeds (our math), and the placeholder figure in the Xbox store data.
  • Added a "Will GTA 6 fit on my console?" checker and a table of usable space on eight PS5 and Xbox Series models, including the current 825 GB PS5 Digital Edition, corrected the origin of the 676.7 GB hoax (a doctored image posted on X on December 24, 2025 and recycled in June 2026, not a placeholder store listing), and fixed the GTA V size comparison.
