What matters when you pick one
- Your console comes first. Sony's Pulse Elite connects to a PS5, PC, Mac or PlayStation Portal over PlayStation Link, and Sony lists no Xbox. On Xbox, Microsoft's own headset pairs straight to the console over Xbox Wireless with no dongle, and SteelSeries and Turtle Beach sell separate Xbox versions with their own transmitters. Buy the version its maker lists for your console.
- Two consoles? The Xbox versions of the Arctis Nova 7 Gen 2 and the Stealth 600 also list PS5 and PS4, according to SteelSeries and Turtle Beach. The PlayStation versions on this page do not list Xbox, and Microsoft's own headset does not list PlayStation.
- Wired works on both. The DualSense has a 3.5 mm headset jack (Sony), and the Xbox Wireless Controller has a 3.5 mm stereo headset jack (Microsoft). Any wired headset with that plug works on either console, with no transmitter or pairing needed.
- 3D audio on PS5 is a console setting. Sony's support page sets it up under Settings > Sound > 3D Audio (Headphones), where you can build a personalized profile. Sony describes it for headphones in general, not only its own.
- Spatial audio on Xbox depends on the game. Microsoft says Windows Sonic, Dolby Atmos and DTS Headphone:X "require supported content", and GTA VI's Xbox listing does not mention any of them yet.
- Battery life. Rob Nelson's playthrough of the story took about 80 hours, according to the New York Times reported (see GTA 6 story length), so compare the makers' battery figures below.
