Animals Rockstar has shown
These are visible in Rockstar's own material: the two trailers, the Extended Look, the screenshots on the official site and the cover art. The American alligator is the star. One wanders into a convenience store in Trailer 1's social-feed montage, gators circle an airboat in the Grassrivers screenshots, and a hunting party poses with a dead one next to a dead wildcat.
The best wildlife shot is from Mount Kalaga National Park: a cougar creeping up on a herd of deer at a stream, which is the image at the top of this page. Predators hunting prey on their own suggests an ecosystem closer to Red Dead Redemption 2 than to GTA V, but that is our reading. Rockstar has not described how wildlife behaves.
More detail is due soon. Game Informer says its GTA VI cover story, in the digital issue out September 29, covers a "staggering amount of wildlife", native and otherwise, on land, in the air and at sea. reported We will update this page then. What the magazine has announced so far is on the Game Informer cover story.
Pet, scold or study. Postmode's recap of the Extended Look reports a Pet, Scold and Study menu on a dog (hold R1). When Jason pets one, a small angel icon appears, a sign that some background stat changed. reported Whether that is the Criminal Profile, the relationship or something else has not been explained.
Track species. IGN's preview, as KeenGamer recapped it, says animals can be studied and the game tracks newly discovered species. reported GTABase, a fan database, describes it as a checklist filled at the zoo or in the wild, much like Red Dead Redemption 2's Compendium. rumor
Feed dogs. GTABase also says you can buy dog treats at convenience stores. No outlet has repeated it. rumor
Hunt. Rockstar's screenshots show hunters in the Mount Kalaga woods and gator hunters on airboats. official Vice's preview summary says hunting is tied to one of Jason's contacts and pays. reported More on hunting in GTA 6.
Fish. Previews compare fishing to Red Dead Redemption 2 in detail, but you release every catch because fish cannot be carried. reported More on fishing in GTA 6.
Visit the zoo. A zoo is in the game and a zoo trip counts as a date, per previews. See the zoo and how dates work. reported
Rockstar has not shown a pet you keep or a dog companion like Chop from GTA V. All of the side activities that involve animals are on our list of everything you can do in GTA 6.
Official, reported and fan-spotted
Official means the animal is visible in Rockstar's trailers, screenshots, artwork or the Extended Look. Reported means a credible outlet saw it in official footage but Rockstar has not called it out. Fan-spotted sightings come from community databases and fan frame-by-frame work. Species labels like "bobcat or Florida panther" for the wildcat are fan readings too, and they sit in the Real-world basis line of each entry.
The manatee is a special case. Fan recap site Postmode spotted one printed on Jason's shirt in the Extended Look, suggests it is Leonida's symbolic animal and a sports team mascot, and says some manatees also appear in the water later in the video. Postmode is the only recap we found that mentions live manatees, so they stay unconfirmed here until a second source or a clear frame backs it up. Rockstar has since put a cartoon manatee, Chunkee the Manatee, on a shot glass in its $399.99 Collector's Boxofficial, so the manatee is an official Leonida motif, but that says nothing about live manatees in the game.

Gators are Leonida's signature animal: one wanders into a convenience store in Trailer 1, they surround airboats in the Grassrivers, and one sits on the cover art. Rockstar says they may be the wetlands' most famous attraction.

Gator hunting is an activity

A cougar stalks a herd of deer at a stream in an official Mount Kalaga National Park screenshot. Predators hunting prey on their own suggests a living ecosystem like Red Dead Redemption 2's.

Postmode spotted a manatee printed on Jason's shirt in the Extended Look, reads it as Leonida's symbolic animal and a sports team mascot, and says some manatees also appear in the water later in the video. No other recap we checked mentions live manatees.
Rockstar's Collector's Box includes a shot glass of Chunkee the Manatee, a cartoon character. That makes the manatee an official Leonida motif, not proof of live manatees in the game

Frequently asked questions
What animals are in GTA 6?
Rockstar's own screenshots, trailers and artwork show 11 kinds so far: American alligators, a cougar, deer, a wildcat, green iguanas, a flamingo, dolphins, an eel, reef fish, a sea turtle and dogs. Fans have spotted more, including a shark, a snake and a raccoon, but those are unconfirmed.
Can you pet dogs in GTA 6?
Yes. Postmode's recap of the Extended Look reports a Pet, Scold and Study menu on a dog, opened by holding R1. When Jason pets one, a small icon appears that suggests a hidden stat changed; which system it feeds has not been explained. GTABase, a fan database, adds that you can feed dogs treats bought at convenience stores; no outlet has repeated that, so treat it as rumor.
Can you hunt in GTA 6?
Yes. Rockstar screenshots show hunters with rifles in Mount Kalaga and gator hunters on an airboat in the Grassrivers. Previews say hunting runs through one of Jason's contacts and can make money.
Does GTA 6 have an animal compendium?
Something like one is reported. IGN's preview, as KeenGamer recapped it, says animals can be studied and the game tracks newly discovered species. GTABase, a fan database, goes further and describes a checklist you fill at the zoo or in the wild, like Red Dead Redemption 2's Compendium. Rockstar has not described it.
Are there sharks in GTA 6?
Not confirmed. Fan trackers list a shark in the open-water shots of Trailer 1, but Rockstar has not shown one clearly or named one. The confirmed sea life is dolphins, a sea turtle, an eel and reef fish.
Can you own a pet in GTA 6?
Not announced. Dogs can be petted and scolded out in the world, but Rockstar has not shown a pet or animal companion you keep, like Chop in GTA V.
What changed on this page
Added Game Informer's September 29 cover story, which it says covers a staggering amount of wildlife, and the cartoon Chunkee the Manatee shot glass in Rockstar's Collector's Box.
Credited species tracking to IGN's preview via KeenGamer, marked GTABase's dog-treat and checklist details as rumor from a fan database, and linked the new hunting and fishing pages. Also retagged the Pet, Scold and Study menu as reported (it comes from Postmode's recap) and noted that the zoo's location is not announced. The quick facts no longer say fishing is shown, since only previews describe it.
