Why there are no GTA 6 mods yet
PC mods need a PC version, and GTA 6 does not have one. Rockstar has announced only PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, and Rockstar has never supported mods on consoles. GTA IV, Red Dead Redemption 2 and GTA V reached PC 7 to 19 months after their console launches, so the realistic window for any GTA 6 modding is 2027 at the earliest. That is a projection, not a date. The GTA 6 PC page tracks every official word and the history behind the estimate.
Until then, a "GTA 6 PC mod", "GTA 6 PC download" or "GTA 6 map for GTA V" file is either fake or a fan remake inside another game. Rockstar has never released a GTA 6 PC build for anyone to mod. Treat those downloads as malware risks. The system requirements page explains why every GTA 6 PC spec sheet online is invented, too.
What Rockstar's Mod Guidelines say
Rockstar posted the Mod Guidelines in the community resources section of its site, dated September 10, 2026. Press picked them up between September 19 and 22. They apply to Rockstar's games generally, the Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption series among them. Rockstar describes them as a summary of its Terms of Service and the Creator Platform License Agreement, and says plainly that they are not a license. Here is every rule, grouped under Rockstar's four headings and paraphrased.
| Rockstar's heading | What it rules out |
|---|---|
| Respect Our Games | Expanding or changing official storylines, plots, missions, characters or continuity. Combining maps, locations, characters, stories or assets from one Rockstar game into another. Multiplayer modding anywhere except the licensed Creator Platform (or another direct Rockstar license). Making Rockstar games run on consoles, devices or platforms where Rockstar has not released them. |
| Do Not Infringe Rockstar Games or Third-Party IP | Cheat menus or software that interferes with official multiplayer, online services or the Creator Platform. Using Rockstar logos or IP to suggest a mod or server is endorsed. Anyone else's protected IP, including art, characters, music, games, ads, brands, logos and real-world locations. Modifying or reusing Rockstar voice performances. Any real person's voice, image or likeness without written permission. |
| Do Not Harm the Creator Community | Mods that break Rockstar's User Rules or Community Guidelines. Pornography, violent extremism, self-harm promotion, threats against players, and anything that puts minors at risk. Abuse, bullying or harassment. Conflict roleplay or military simulations depicting real-world armed organizations. |
| Do Not Engage in Unauthorized or Abusive Monetization | Making money from mods anywhere except the Creator Platform and Rockstar-approved storefronts; everything else must be strictly non-commercial. Real-money gambling, loot boxes, gacha and other paid chance mechanics. Selling in-game currency for real money. Crypto of any kind, including NFTs, tokens, memecoins and stablecoins. Mods that are ads, product placement or sponsored content. Charging for access to Rockstar-made assets, missions or DLC. |
The last line of the page is the one that matters most in practice: Rockstar reserves the right to take down any mod or other user content "at any time for any reason".
What the guidelines still leave room for
Rockstar does not publish an allowed list, so this is our reading of what fits inside the rules:
- Visual and technical mods in single player: lighting, textures, draw distance, performance tweaks.
- Gameplay tweaks such as handling, realism, traffic and police behavior, as long as they do not add to the story.
- Original creations: vehicles, clothing and tools you made yourself, shared for free.
- Single-player trainers that never touch online play. The guidelines do not mention anti-cheat. Separately, Rockstar Support's GTA Online BattlEye FAQ says BattlEye can be switched off for GTA V's Story Mode on PC. official
Two popular kinds of mod now sit on the wrong side of the text, by our reading. Car packs of real, branded vehicles clash with the ban on other companies' brands and logos. Map ports that move one Rockstar world into another, such as rebuilding Leonida inside GTA V or GTA V's Los Santos inside GTA 6, are exactly the cross-title mashups the first section rules out.
The Creator Platform, FiveM and Cfx.re
On August 11, 2023, Rockstar announced that Cfx.re, the team behind the FiveM (GTA V) and RedM (Red Dead Redemption 2) roleplay platforms, was now part of Rockstar Games. official The Mod Guidelines link the words "Creator Platform License Agreement" straight to FiveM's terms, and that agreement, last updated September 10, 2026 alongside the guidelines, names FiveM and RedM as the Creator Services it covers. So the "licensed Creator Platform" that owns multiplayer modding and paid mods is the Cfx.re platform, now under Rockstar's contract.
That agreement lets server owners make money within its rules and bans the same things the guidelines do: real-money gambling, loot boxes, selling virtual currency and more. Rockstar Support's BattlEye FAQ adds that official community roleplay servers do not require BattlEye.
The shift from tolerance to rules has been visible for a while. In January 2025 the team behind the Liberty City Preservation Project, which rebuilt GTA IV's city inside GTA V, took it down after speaking with Rockstar. reported Kotaku noted the closure of numerous online modding communities in the year before the guidelines appeared. reported
What this means for GTA 6 on PC
None of this is announced for GTA 6 specifically. Our reading of what the guidelines imply, if and when a PC version exists:
- The rules come first. The guidelines cover Rockstar's games with no carve-out, so a PC release would arrive into them. Modders will not get a grace period of the kind GTA V's scene grew up in.
- Single-player modding survives. Graphics, realism and original content fit the rules, which is where most of GTA V's PC mod scene lives.
- No fan storylines. Mods that add missions, continue Jason and Lucia's story or change characters are banned outright.
- Multiplayer mods go through Rockstar. Any GTA 6 roleplay scene would run on the Creator Platform, if Rockstar opens it to GTA 6. Rockstar has not said whether or when. Online play at launch is not part of GTA 6 at all: Take-Two has confirmed a single-player launch, and multiplayer later is only reported. See GTA 6 Online.
- Paid mods go through Rockstar too. Patreon-style paywalls outside the Creator Platform break the monetization rules.
The port rule reaches beyond PC. The guidelines ban making Rockstar games run on platforms Rockstar has not released them on, and GTA BOOM tied that to fan ports such as a GTA V build for Switch. A fan-made GTA 6 for any unannounced platform would break it. See GTA 6 on Switch 2 for where that stands officially.

Frequently asked questions
Can you mod GTA 6?
Not yet. GTA 6 launches November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S only, consoles do not run mods, and no PC version has been announced. Any GTA 6 PC build or GTA 6 mod offered today is either fake or a fan remake running inside GTA V.
Will GTA 6 have mods on PC?
Nothing is announced, because PC itself is not announced. If a PC version arrives, Rockstar's Mod Guidelines from September 10, 2026 already set the rules: single-player mods that stay inside the game and away from the story are the kind the guidelines leave room for; story mods, cross-game mashups and paid mods outside Rockstar's Creator Platform are banned.
Are story mods allowed under Rockstar's mod guidelines?
No. The guidelines tell modders not to expand or change Rockstar's official storylines, plots, missions, characters or continuity. That rules out fan campaigns and new story missions.
Will there be GTA 6 roleplay servers like FiveM?
Not announced. The guidelines limit multiplayer modding to Rockstar's licensed Creator Platform, which is built on FiveM and RedM, the Cfx.re platforms Rockstar has owned since August 2023. Whether GTA 6 joins it, and when, has not been said.
Can I sell mods for Rockstar games?
Only through Rockstar's Creator Platform and the storefronts Rockstar approves. Every other mod must be strictly non-commercial, and real-money gambling, loot boxes, selling in-game currency and crypto or NFTs are banned outright.
Do the new mod guidelines apply to GTA V?
Yes. They cover Rockstar's games in general, including Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption, and they are dated September 10, 2026. GTA 6 is not named, but nothing in them carves it out.
