The short answer
Rockstar has not confirmed any returning protagonist or cameo for GTA 6. Trevor, Michael, Franklin, Tommy Vercetti, CJ and Niko Bellic have not appeared in either trailer, the 26-minute Extended Look of August 27, 2026, the official screenshots or the store listings. not announced That could still change on November 19, when players see the whole game.
What Rockstar has done is nod to the 2002 Vice City in its edition copy, and put one character on screen that fans tie to GTA Online. Everything else on this page is rumor, wishful thinking or an actor answering questions at a convention.
Who Rockstar has actually shown
The two playable leads are new: Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos. Rockstar has written bios for six more, and all of them are new too: Cal Hampton, Boobie Ike, Dre'Quan Priest, the rap duo Real Dimez, Raul Bautista and Brian Heder. official The Extended Look added more names without bios, such as Valentina, the cop Mendez, Andrés de León and Petra Navarro. Only Valentina has a possible past. The full list is on the GTA 6 characters hub.
Official nods to older games
These come from Rockstar's own material, and they are references, not appearances. official
- Tommy's shirt. The Vintage Vice City Pack's weapon pattern invites you to "channel the original Vice City kingpin, Tommy Vercetti," through his palm-tree button-up.
- The Vercetti Estate. The Ultimate Edition's Hawk & Little Morgan revolvers have "classic Vice City stylings sourced from the Vercetti Estate," Tommy's mansion in the 2002 game. Whether you can visit it is unknown.
- The Ocean View Hotel. Tommy's first safehouse is back on the beachfront, in Rockstar's Vintage Vice City Pack art and in official screenshots.
- Liberty City. Lucia's official bio mentions her family's Liberty City days, the city of GTA IV.
More of these callbacks are on the easter eggs page, and the old city's story is on Vice City history.
Valentina: the one possible returning face
In the Extended Look, a fixer called Valentina hires Jason and Lucia to guard Andrés de León. She shares a name and look with the Valentina who appeared briefly in GTA Online's Money Fronts update in June 2025, and IGN, Kotaku and fans read her as the same character. Rockstar has not said so. reported If it holds, she would be a GTA Online side character, not a GTA V lead. Her page has the details: Valentina in GTA 6.
Fan favorites, one by one
Every name below is unannounced for GTA 6. The note says what, if anything, is behind the talk.
| Character | From | GTA 6 status | What is behind the talk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Trevor Philips | GTA V (2013), GTA Online | not announced | Not in any trailer, screenshot or store copy. His actor, Steven Ogg, told ScreenRant it would be fun if Trevor appeared only to be killed at the start of the new game (reported, via GAMINGbible). The "Agent Trevor" files in the archive of 2022 Rockstar data that circulated in September 2026 belong to a cancelled GTA V expansion, not to GTA 6. |
| Michael De Santa | GTA V, GTA Online | rumor | A viral post on X, reported by GAMINGbible on July 6, 2026, claimed Ned Luke was back as Michael and cited IGN. Luke replied "Wouldn't that be nice?", and GAMINGbible found no official word or credible evidence behind the claim. Michael last appeared in GTA Online in December 2025. |
| Franklin Clinton | GTA V, GTA Online | not announced | No rumor with a source. Shawn Fonteno told fans at Sci-Fi Valley Con 2024 that he could not say even if he knew, adding "I hope the whole crew is back" (reported by Popverse, via GAMINGbible). |
| Lamar Davis | GTA V, GTA Online | not announced | No rumor with a source. He is a GTA Online regular, from the opening ride in 2013 to The Contract in 2021. |
| Lester Crest | GTA V, GTA Online | not announced | No rumor with a source. He plans heists in GTA Online, the one place GTA V's cast keeps turning up. |
| Tommy Vercetti | GTA: Vice City (2002) | named, not shown | Rockstar's edition copy references him twice, as nods. He belongs to the older 3D universe, and Ray Liotta, who voiced him, died in 2022. No sign of him as a character. |
| Lance Vance | Vice City, Vice City Stories | not announced | No rumor with a source. Also a 3D-universe character. |
| Ken Rosenberg | Vice City, San Andreas | not announced | No rumor with a source. His 2002 office was on Washington Beach, a district name GTA 6 reuses, but the name is all that returns so far. |
| Phil Cassidy | GTA III, Vice City, Vice City Stories | rumor | Trailer 2 shows a TV ad for "Phil's Ammu-Nation", and fans read it as a nod to him. The man in the ad has both arms, and Rockstar has not named him. |
| Carl "CJ" Johnson | GTA: San Andreas (2004) | not announced | No rumor with a source. CJ is a 3D-universe lead, the same continuity problem as Tommy. |
| Niko Bellic | GTA IV (2008) | not announced | No rumor with a source. He is from the same HD universe, so a cameo would not break continuity. Lucia's official bio mentions her family's Liberty City days, the city of GTA IV, but nothing official ties her to Niko. |
The "Agent Trevor" files are covered in our report on the 192 GB Rockstar archive leak. We do not use leaked material as evidence for anything in GTA 6.
Why Tommy and CJ are the long shots
Rockstar keeps its games in separate continuities. GTA III, Vice City and San Andreas form what fans call the 3D universe. GTA IV, GTA V and GTA Online form the HD universe, where cities are rebuilt from scratch and the older games' leads do not appear, even when names get dropped. GTA 6 looks like an HD-universe game: Engadget reads a livestream feed in the Extended Look as Lifeinvader, GTA V's social network, and VGC spotted GTA V brands such as Weazel News and Pisswasser in Trailer 1. reported Rockstar has not spelled that out.
So Tommy Vercetti, Lance Vance, Ken Rosenberg and CJ would have to cross from the older universe into the newer one. So far the series has dropped names across that line, like the Vercetti Estate, but none of those four has appeared in an HD-universe game. Trevor, Michael, Franklin, Lamar, Lester and Niko live in the same world as GTA 6, so a cameo from any of them is possible, just unannounced. The Vice City history page explains the split in more detail.
Cameos have happened before
Rockstar does bring characters back, usually in small roles:
- GTA IV into GTA V. GTA V and GTA Online brought back GTA IV characters including Brucie, Karen and Packie (IGN). reported Early in GTA V, Trevor kills Johnny Klebitz, the lead of GTA IV's The Lost and Damned (GAMINGbible). reported
- GTA V's leads live on in GTA Online. Lamar meets new players at the start of GTA Online in 2013, Trevor runs a job in the 2015 Heists update, Franklin headlines The Contract (December 15, 2021) and Michael returns in A Safehouse in the Hills (December 10, 2025).
- Leads do not come back as leads. No numbered GTA has made an earlier game's lead playable again. That is our reading of the series, not a Rockstar rule, but it is why a cameo is far more likely than a playable Trevor or Niko.
If fans are right about Valentina, she fits the same pattern: a minor GTA Online character turning up in the next game. See GTA 6 Online for what is known about the multiplayer side.
Will we know before November 19?
Probably not. Rockstar has announced no voice cast, and performers were reportedly reminded that their NDAs run until November 19, 2026. reported Rockstar introduces characters on its own Only in Leonida pages, and none of the eight there is from an earlier game. We will update this page on launch day if anyone familiar turns up. The voice cast directory tracks every casting claim in the meantime.
Frequently asked questions
Will Trevor be in GTA 6?
Nothing says so. Trevor has not appeared in any GTA 6 trailer, screenshot or store listing, and Rockstar has not announced any returning GTA V character. His actor Steven Ogg told ScreenRant it would be fun if Trevor appeared only to be killed at the start, as GAMINGbible reported. That is an actor's wish, not a hint from Rockstar.
Is Tommy Vercetti in GTA 6?
Not as a character, as far as anything official shows. Rockstar's edition copy references him twice: the Vintage Vice City Pack weapon pattern is inspired by his palm-tree shirt, and the Ultimate Edition revolvers have "classic Vice City stylings sourced from the Vercetti Estate." Those are nods. He belongs to the 2002 game's separate continuity.
Will CJ return in GTA 6?
There is no sign of it. CJ is the lead of 2004's San Andreas, part of the older 3D universe, and everything shown so far places GTA 6 in the modern HD universe of GTA IV and GTA V. No lead from the older universe has ever appeared in the newer one.
Are any GTA 5 characters in GTA 6?
None has been confirmed. The closest is Valentina, who hires Jason and Lucia in the Extended Look. Fans and outlets such as IGN and Kotaku identify her as the Valentina from GTA Online's 2025 Money Fronts update, but Rockstar has not said they are the same character.
Is Michael De Santa in GTA 6?
Not announced. A viral post on X, reported by GAMINGbible in July 2026, claimed Ned Luke was back as Michael; Luke answered "Wouldn't that be nice?" and GAMINGbible found no credible evidence for it. Michael did return in GTA Online's December 2025 update, which is where GTA V's leads have kept appearing.
When will we know which characters return?
Probably not before launch. Rockstar has announced no cast, and performers were reportedly reminded that their NDAs run until November 19, 2026. Any cameo will most likely be discovered in the game itself.
