September 2022: the hack

On September 18, 2022, a user posting as "teapotuberhacker" uploaded about 90 video clips of a Grand Theft Auto VI development build to GTAForums. They showed early versions of Jason and Lucia, a diner robbery, Vice City streets, debug overlays and placeholder assets. The next day Rockstar confirmed a "network intrusion in which an unauthorized third party illegally accessed and downloaded confidential information," and said it did not expect any disruption to its live game services or any long-term effect on development. official

The hacker: Arion Kurtaj

The attacker was Arion Kurtaj, then 17, a member of the Lapsus$ group, which also went after Uber and Nvidia. He carried out the Rockstar attack from a hotel room while on bail, using an Amazon Fire TV Stick. Doctors found him unfit to stand trial, so a jury was asked only whether he did the acts, and in August 2023 it found that he had. On December 21, 2023, at 18, he was given an indefinite hospital order at Southwark Crown Court. reported

That was not the end of it. In July 2026 BBC cyber correspondent Joe Tidy reported that Kurtaj had left the secure hospital, was being held in a normal prison, and was awaiting a criminal retrial scheduled for November 2026. reported

December 2023: the trailer leak

Trailer 1 was set for 9 AM Eastern on December 5, 2023. On the evening of December 4 a low-quality copy spread on X, and Rockstar posted the real trailer about 15 hours early with a short note: "Our trailer has leaked so please watch the real thing on YouTube." official It still broke YouTube's 24-hour record for a non-music video. The Trailer 1 breakdown has the full story.

April 2026: a third-party breach with no GTA 6 content

In April 2026 the extortion group ShinyHunters published what it said was Rockstar data, more than 78.6 million records. BleepingComputer reported on April 13 that, by the group's account, it took the data from Rockstar's Snowflake cloud storage using authentication tokens stolen from Anodot, an outside anomaly-detection company. The group described it as internal analytics for GTA Online and Red Dead Online: in-game revenue and economy data, player behavior, support tickets and anti-cheat testing. Nothing reported from it was GTA 6 material. reported

Rockstar told Kotaku that "a limited amount of non-material company information was accessed in connection with a third-party data breach" and that the incident "has no impact on our organization or our players." reported It was not a GTA 6 leak; we list it so the record of Rockstar breaches is complete.

August 2026: CYBERLEEK

From around August 18, 2026, a group calling itself CYBERLEEK began posting short gameplay clips, starting with a basketball mini-game and a stretch of driving, gunfire and police response. A purported map of Leonida followed. SVG counted 14 clips by August 26, and more came before the official showcase. In those final days the leaker posted clips showing Lucia for the first time, including what outlets described as part of her opening. Outlets such as Game Rant described them without embedding them. reported

How old the build is has not been established. Community analysis dates it to roughly 2023 to early 2025; a person who tracks the game's development, quoted by God is a Geek, put it before 2024. SVG says there is no way to know its age, and Rockstar has not said. rumor

Take-Two issued DMCA takedowns and began subpoena proceedings targeting Microsoft, whose GitHub hosted the footage, and Discord, where the group coordinated. reported Per SVG, the group demanded that publishers stop selling licenses instead of games people own outright and stop locking content behind extra paywalls, and it pushed its own cryptocurrency in its posts and in the clips themselves. The clips arrived in the nine days before Rockstar's own Extended Look premiered on August 27.

August 26, 2026: Rockstar's response

Rockstar posted on Instagram that "having videos of Grand Theft Auto VI gameplay leak in this way has been heartbreaking for our team," that "this is obviously not how we intended for you to see the game," and that the team was focused on "getting the game finished (nearly there!)." It said it hoped everyone would "wait a bit longer to experience the game for themselves on November 19." official

The statement did not ask fans to stop sharing the clips. The full context is in our news post, Rockstar calls the GTA 6 leaks heartbreaking and says the game is nearly there.

September 2026: the 192 GB archive

Around September 18, 2026, an archive of roughly 192 GB of Rockstar files began circulating. Reporting from Insider Gaming, TweakTown, Notebookcheck and GamesRadar traced it to the 2022 hack rather than a new one. Most of it is GTA V material: a cut Liberty City expansion, the cancelled Agent Trevor story DLC and other unreleased assets. The GTA 6 portion is early, low-resolution map data that outlets described as unrepresentative of the final game. reported Details: the 192 GB Rockstar archive is mostly cut GTA V content.

On September 21 IGN reported that Take-Two had taken down various YouTube videos and posts showing the leaked material or clips of its audio, and that creators who post it risk copyright strikes. IGN added that Take-Two did not seem to be going "scorched-earth" the way it had against the GTA 6 leaks. reported Rockstar has not commented on the archive.

September 24, 2026: the Collector's Box datamine

Hours before Rockstar's announcement on September 24, 2026, Insider Gaming and other outlets reported a datamine of upcoming Rockstar Store products that included "The Goodtime State - Vice City Collection". Counts of the listed items ran from 22 to 57 depending on the outlet, with shirts, caps, bags and stickers among them. rumor

About four hours later Rockstar announced the box on its Newswire. The Rockstar Store sells it for $399.99: 11 collectibles, shipping from November 19, with the game sold separately. official Rockstar also says more apparel and collectibles are coming to its store soon official, but the individual datamined items are unconfirmed. The September 9 photos of a GTA VI box, posted by someone claiming to work at a packaging company in Mexico and later tied to this product by Metro, are rated on the rumor tracker, and the box itself is covered on our GTA 6 collector's box page.

September 24 to 25, 2026: the map labels Rockstar removed

The box includes a double-sided poster with "a full view of the Leonida map" on the back, according to Rockstar's store. official Notebookcheck and TheGamer reported on September 25 that the first store photo of the poster showed place labels, and that Rockstar then edited the photo to remove them. Dexerto adds that Rockstar kept the island outlines and made no comment. reported The photo on the store now shows only a cropped corner of the map side, with no readable place names; we checked it on September 26.

According to Dexerto, fans read two of the removed labels as Sandbars and Crude Islands, on a group of four islands at the left edge of the art. Notebookcheck adds partial labels beginning "Dra..." and "Beld...". rumor These are readings of an image Rockstar withdrew, so we treat them as rumors and keep them off our map pages, and we do not host or link to copies of the original photo. Rockstar has still not published a full map image; the poster ships from November 19.

Why leaked builds mislead

  • They are old. The 2022 clips came from a build years before launch. The 2026 clips are of unknown age; community analysis puts them roughly between 2023 and early 2025, which is a rumor, and even an early 2025 build would be well short of the finished game.
  • They show debug state. Placeholder textures, unlit scenes, developer overlays and test animations are normal in a build and absent from a shipped game.
  • Maps change. Early map data is a plan. Areas get cut, merged and reshaped. The purported Leonida maps have no standing next to the six regions Rockstar has named; see the GTA 6 map and the map size comparison.
  • Story fragments lack context. A few minutes of a cutscene tells you a scene exists, not what it means. The GTA 6 story page sticks to what Rockstar has published.

A related case: the Glasgow tribunal

Not a leak, but often filed with them. Thirty-one Rockstar North staff dismissed in October 2025, backed by the IWGB union, are challenging their dismissals at the Glasgow Tribunal Centre. The IWGB says the final hearing began on September 10, 2026 and runs until at least October 15. reported

Rockstar's filing, reported September 10, says the workers discussed confidential project features on a private Discord, including "an online 32 player format," and calls game features "the most closely guarded secrets of the company." It announces nothing. reported See the court filing that mentions a 32-player format and the GTA 6 Online page.

The other problem: fake leaks

Genuine leaks are rare. Fake ones are constant: the made-up 676.7 GB file size, "Trailer 3 out now" alerts, invented cast lists, fabricated PC spec sheets and crypto-watermarked clips. The GTA 6 rumor tracker lists each one with where it came from and why it is false.

What to watch instead

Everything Rockstar has actually shown is on its official site: three videos, the official screenshots, character bios and region pages. Our GTA 6 trailers hub plays all three videos, the Extended Look breakdown covers the 26 minutes of real gameplay with timestamps, and the GTA 6 news feed logs each official release as it happens.

Frequently asked questions

Are the GTA 6 leaks real?

The September 2022 hack and the August 2026 CYBERLEEK clips are genuine; Rockstar acknowledged both. Both show unfinished development builds. How old the 2026 build is has not been established; community analysis puts it roughly between 2023 and early 2025, which is a rumor, not a fact.

Who leaked GTA 6 in 2022?

Arion Kurtaj, a teenage member of the Lapsus$ hacking group. In August 2023 a UK jury found he carried out the hack, and on December 21, 2023 he received an indefinite hospital order. In July 2026 the BBC reported he had left the secure hospital, was being held in prison, and was awaiting a criminal retrial scheduled for November 2026.

What did Rockstar say about the August 2026 leaks?

On Instagram on August 26, 2026, Rockstar said having gameplay leak "has been heartbreaking for our team," that "this is obviously not how we intended for you to see the game," that the team was busy "getting the game finished (nearly there!)," and that it hoped everyone would wait to play on November 19. It did not ask fans to stop sharing the clips.

Is it illegal to watch GTA 6 leaks?

Watching is not a crime in most places. Uploading, re-hosting or distributing leaked material is copyright infringement, and Take-Two issues takedowns and pursues leakers. We do not host or link to leaked media, both for that reason and because old builds mislead.

Did the leaked map show the whole game?

No. The purported maps that circulated in August and September 2026 were built from leaked build data of unknown age and fan reconstruction. Rockstar has not published a full official map image. The poster in its $399.99 Collector's Box has a full Leonida map on the back and ships from November 19, 2026; the store photo shows only a cropped corner. The six regions Rockstar has named are on our map page.

Did Rockstar accidentally reveal the GTA 6 map?

Not the whole map. Rockstar's store photo of the Collector's Box poster shows a cropped corner of the official map. Notebookcheck and TheGamer reported on September 25, 2026 that the first version of that photo showed some place labels and that Rockstar edited them out. The names fans read from it are rumors, and the photo on the store now shows no readable place names.

What changed on this page

  • Corrected the length of the Extended Look to 26 minutes, matching the official upload (26:48).
  • Added the April 2026 third-party breach (no GTA 6 content), Take-Two's takedowns of the 192 GB material, the September 24 store datamine and Rockstar's edit of its Collector's Box map photo; clarified that Rockstar has not published a full map image and that the box's poster, with a full map, ships November 19.
  • Added the July 2026 news that Arion Kurtaj left the secure hospital and faces a retrial in November, the December 2023 Trailer 1 leak, Take-Two's subpoenas, and a dated timeline table; corrected Rockstar's August 26 statement (it did not ask fans to stop sharing clips), the build-age attribution (community analysis, so a rumor), and the tribunal venue and dates (Glasgow, from September 10 until at least October 15); matched the CYBERLEEK build age to the agreed range, roughly 2023 to early 2025.
