Pre-loading opens at local midnight on November 12, 2026, one week before launch. Digital pre-orders download from your library (PS5: Game Library > Your Collection; Xbox: My games & apps > Full library), and physical buyers redeem the code from the box first.
The official line
November 12 is not a fan theory. Take-Two’s pre-order announcement on June 24, 2026 said digital pre-order buyers “will be able to begin pre-loading on November 12, 2026,” and that the boxed code version “will be available starting November 12, 2026 to support pre-loading.” Rockstar Support adds that pre-load begins “at local midnight on November 12,” and the PlayStation Store listing shows a 7-Day Pre-load with no hour. The PlayStation refund catch
On the PlayStation Store, a pre-order stops being refundable once the main game starts downloading, and Sony’s policy says pre-loading counts. With Auto-Download switched on, a PS5 can start the pre-load by itself the moment it opens. If you are not sure you are keeping the game, cancel by November 10, or switch Auto-Download off. On PS5 the pre-load may open on the store’s clock, as the unlock does, so on the US West Coast it could start at 9:00 PM PT on November 11 (our reading). On Xbox, Xbox Support says the cancel window closes 10 days before launch, so pre-loading does not change anything.
Who can pre-load
- Digital pre-orders from the PlayStation Store or Microsoft Store: yes, from midnight on November 12.
- Physical code-in-box copies: yes, after you redeem the code. Rockstar says codes redeemed before launch pre-load from November 12. Boxes only become available to ship and pick up from that day, so a delivered copy usually starts a day or more later. On Amazon, the listing says shipments “will begin arriving November 12 for pre-load”: Prime members get free release-day delivery that day, and standard delivery can arrive later, so check the date at checkout. - Anyone without a license: no. You cannot pre-load a game you have not bought.
How big is it?
Nobody knows yet. Rockstar has not published an install size, and neither store lists one. The 676.7 GB “Xbox listing” was a doctored screenshot posted on X on Christmas Eve 2025 and recycled by a parody account in June 2026, and it even claimed Xbox One support. The space has to be somewhere the game can run from: the console’s own SSD, an M.2 SSD in a PS5’s expansion slot or an Xbox Storage Expansion Card, never a USB drive. Make room for GTA VI
PS5 and PS5 Pro take an M.2 SSD with a heatsink in the expansion slot; Xbox Series X|S takes an expansion card, and games play from both. A USB drive such as the Seagate Game Drive only stores PS5 games: copy a game back to play it.

How to pre-load on PS5
- Go to Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Automatic Updates and turn on Auto-Download and Auto-Install in Rest Mode. The pre-load can then start on its own as soon as it opens.
- Go to Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode and turn on Stay Connected to the Internet.
- From November 12, open Game Library > Your Collection, select Grand Theft Auto VI and choose Download if it has not already started.
- Put the console in Rest Mode, not off.
- Check progress under Downloads/Uploads in the Control Center.
You can also start the download from the PlayStation App on your phone, and the console picks it up.
How to pre-load on Xbox Series X|S
- Go to Settings > System > Updates and make sure games and apps are kept up to date.
- Go to Settings > General > Power options and choose Sleep, so the console can download while it looks off.
- From November 12, open My games & apps > Full library > All owned games, select Grand Theft Auto VI and choose Install.
- Watch progress in Queue under My games & apps.
With remote features on, the Xbox app on your phone can start the install too. If you own a 512 GB Series S, read the Series S storage notes first.
Launch night
A pre-loaded game unlocks at your region’s release time on its own, as long as the console is online. On PS5 that is midnight in each store region’s main time zone, going by the PlayStation Store listings, so 12:00 AM Eastern (9:00 PM Pacific on November 18) across the US; Xbox has not listed a time. Every region is on GTA 6 unlock time in your time zone. Leave the console in Rest Mode or Sleep on November 18 so any patch installs first, then follow the launch-night checklist.

Some places reach that time on the evening of November 18, such as 9:00 PM Pacific across the US West Coast on PS5, because each store unlocks at midnight in its main time zone. That is the normal unlock, not early access, and no edition includes early access.
