This page explains the rules: when the story lets you swap and what a swap looks like. The button, the Xbox question and what to try on launch day are in how to switch characters in GTA 6: controls.

What Rob Nelson said

Rob Nelson, co-studio head at Rockstar North, gave the clearest account to Famitsu. Switching, he said, is sometimes restricted depending on story progress. In one early high-rise mission the team locked you to Jason because his military background made it feel more natural. In other missions control moves automatically: during Raul Bautista's getaway, the game hands you Lucia at the wheel while Jason and Raul shoot at the police. reported GamesRadar summed up his point: switching at any moment would feel unnatural for the way the story is told.

Dazed's feature, published just before the Extended Look with interviews of Nelson and other Rockstar staff, describes the everyday version. On the way to a job you can cruise as Jason or swap to Lucia in the passenger seat to scroll her phone, and when the job turns into a chase you can take the wheel one moment and fire from the passenger window the next. It adds that you can play as a couple or cause chaos independently. These lines are Thom Waite's narration, not quotes from Nelson. reported The Extended Look shows it working: Jason is driving through the city, the wheel comes up, and control jumps straight to Lucia so she can shoot, with no satellite zoom. official

The three mission types

TypeHow switching worksExample
LockedOne character for the whole missionThe early high-rise job, played as Jason (Nelson, Famitsu)
ForcedThe game switches you automatically at set momentsRaul's getaway: you take Lucia at the wheel while Jason and Raul shoot (Nelson, Famitsu)
FreeSwitch whenever you likeThe drive to a job: swap between driver and passenger (Dazed's description)

The wheel in the Extended Look shows a portrait of each lead with a heart icon between them and a small Criminal Profile icon under each, as Postmode describes it. official Whether it also offers an option for the pair together has not been confirmed by a source we could check. Nelson told Famitsu what happens to the other one: both have things they do every day around the hideout, and whichever character you are not controlling follows their own schedule. reported

Switching when they are apart

The two can be in different places at once. KeenGamer's recap of the Extended Look describes Lucia BASE jumping off a skyscraper, then the camera pulling high above Vice City, crossing the map and zooming in on Jason, who is spending time with Cal Hampton. reported That is close to GTA V's satellite-style switch. Whether a long switch like this pauses to load on a standard console has not been reported.

The switch button

Not shown on either console. not announced The Extended Look shows the wheel but not the input that opens it, and the "hold Down on the d-pad" line other sites repeat is Beebom's guess based on GTA V. The button table, what to expect on Xbox and what to do when a switch will not go through are in the switching controls guide; every other reported input is on GTA 6 controls.

Switching mid-mission

The signature moment appears in both Trailer 2 and the Extended Look: one character drives, the other leans out of the window. During Raul Bautista's bank-job getaway through Vice Beach, Lucia drives while Jason and Raul fire at police, and the footage moves between them without a transition. official This is the automatic switch Nelson described to Famitsu (see above). Official screenshots show the same setup on a motorbike, with Lucia firing from behind Jason.

The switch can be instant because both characters are already in the scene. GTA V had to stream in another part of the map; GTA 6 only has to hand you the other seat.

The couple

Jason and Lucia's relationship is tracked as a set of states, not a bar. Vice, reporting on YouTuber TGG's three hours at Rockstar North, says there are no scripted dates: you make your own by inviting the other along to the zoo, kayaking or a walk on the beach. reported Romance is optional and ignoring it never removes either character. Vice adds that your relationship choices may affect how parts of the story unfold, although Rockstar has not explained how significant those changes are. reported The full picture is on the GTA 6 relationship page.

The Criminal Profile is also tracked per character, so Jason can stay Professional while Lucia turns Psycho, depending on who you were playing when things went wrong.

Frequently asked questions

Can you switch between Jason and Lucia at any time in GTA 6?

Not always. Rob Nelson of Rockstar North told Famitsu that switching is sometimes restricted by story progress: some missions lock you to one character and some switch you automatically. Rockstar has not spelled out the rules outside missions. GTABase, a fan database, says you can switch at any time in open-world play, but no outlet has repeated that, so treat it as rumor.

What does the character you are not playing do?

They carry on with their own day. Rob Nelson told Famitsu that Jason and Lucia both have things they do every day around the hideout, and whichever one you are not controlling follows their own schedule until you switch to them or bring them along.

Is the switching like GTA V?

Partly. When Jason and Lucia are in the same scene, the swap happens in place, so you can drive as Jason and then take over Lucia to shoot from the passenger seat. When they are apart, KeenGamer describes the camera rising over Vice City and crossing the map to the other character, much like GTA V.

Do you have to play as both characters?

Yes. Both are protagonists with their own story missions, and some missions decide for you who you play.

Can Jason and Lucia split up?

Yes. Dazed, which interviewed Rob Nelson and other Rockstar staff, writes that you can "play as a couple, or go off and cause chaos independently." Splitting up during a police chase also clears the "seen together" evidence icon, and Vice reports it can remove a whole wanted star.

What changed on this page

  • Moved the switch-button details to our switching controls guide so this page covers the rules, added what the other character does while you are away, and linked the full GTA 6 vs GTA 5 comparison. The summary no longer calls story-locked switching a break from GTA V, which also restricted switches during parts of its story.
  • The driver-and-passenger swap is now credited to Dazed writer Thom Waite's own description, not to Rob Nelson, and Postmode's recap is dated August 28.
  • Marked the switch buttons as not shown yet, added how a switch looks when Jason and Lucia are apart, and corrected who said what, including the couple line, which is Dazed's writing rather than a Nelson quote.
