What it measures
The Criminal Profile is not a morality meter. Jason and Lucia are criminals from the first scene, so the game does not ask whether you rob the store. It asks how. Restraint keeps you Professional: no needless deaths, no injuries you did not have to cause, a clean exit. Killing bystanders and causing chaos pushes you toward Aggressive and Violent, and sustained cruelty lands you in Psycho. reported
Small acts count too. KeenGamer's summary of IGN's preview says properly disposing of rubbish is recognized in the calmer direction, and that violence a mission or robbery requires is treated differently from violence you choose. Engadget's recap adds feeding animals to the small acts that help. reported
The tools for staying clean are already in the Extended Look. Colored hit markers are on screen. official Vice's preview report says yellow means a target is incapacitated and red means a kill, so you can see whether a shot took someone down or took them out. reported Previews tie the Professional state to avoiding unnecessary casualties, so a yellow marker should count for more than a red one, though that link is our reading. When Jason pets a dog, a small angel icon flashes on screen, which Postmode reads as a background stat changing. And under each portrait on the switch wheel sits a small face icon that Postmode reads as that character's profile, with Lucia's looking angrier than Jason's. reported
Everything else here comes from the July 2026 previews at Rockstar North, mainly YouTuber TGG's visit, which Vice describes as three hours of gameplay, plus Game Rant and Vice's wider preview roundup. It stays tagged as reported until the game is out.
The states
| State | What previews say | Our reading (not from previews) |
|---|---|---|
| Professional | Restraint: no needless deaths or injuries, clean escapes | Likely the state some story contacts respond to best |
| Aggressive | Named as a state; reached through rougher play | Where many players will sit most of the time |
| Violent | Frequently killing innocents and causing chaos | Expect more fear from bystanders and faster calls to police |
| Psycho | The far end of the named scale | Probably the state with the most visible city reactions |
| Shattered (beyond Psycho) | Enough extreme acts crack the icon, then it shatters; the profile is locked for that playthrough | A new save may be the only way back |
Vice treats the shattering as its own phase past Psycho, not part of it. The four named states move with how you play. The shattered one does not move at all.
What it changes
- Story. reported Some story elements shift with the profile. Previews did not say which. The other system previews tie to the story is the relationship between Jason and Lucia: Vice says relationship choices may affect how parts of the story unfold, without saying how much. More on the relationship page.
- The city. reported How Vice City reacts to each character changes. Previews did not describe specific reactions.
- Each other. not announced Whether one character's profile affects the other, or the relationship, has not been described.
- Contacts. not announced Whether the profile decides who will work with you is a reasonable guess, not a reported fact.
Is it an honor system? How it compares to Red Dead Redemption 2
Close, but it measures something else. Red Dead Redemption 2's honor tracked whether Arthur was good or bad. Jason and Lucia are criminals either way, so the Criminal Profile tracks whether their crimes are controlled or gratuitous. reported Dazed, after interviews with Rockstar staff, wrote that choices in Jason and Lucia's relationship can have repercussions that cut much deeper than Rockstar's earlier games or "honour" systems that reward careful play. That line is about the romance, not the Criminal Profile, and Rockstar has not called the profile an honor system. reported
| RDR2 honor | GTA 6 Criminal Profile | |
|---|---|---|
| Axis | Good against bad | Controlled against gratuitous |
| Reversible | Yes, through good deeds | Yes through restraint, until the icon shatters |
| Per character | One protagonist | Jason and Lucia tracked separately |
| Visible | A meter in the pause menu | An icon that can crack, plus pop-ups you can turn off |
| Story impact | Alternate endings and dialogue | Some story elements and city reactions; ending link not reported |
How to play around it
If the previews hold, a shattered profile cannot be repaired, so a player who wants the Professional version should treat every robbery like a real one: mask on, in and out, no shots once the money is bagged, and aim for yellow hit markers rather than red. How to rob a store in GTA 6 walks through a clean job as shown in the Extended Look.
Because each character has a separate profile, one can stay clean while the other does the messy work. The character switching rules limit that plan, since some missions lock you to one character. And the police side of the same behavior is on the GTA 6 wanted level explainer.
What to do next: read the GTA 6 gameplay hub for every other system. We will check each Criminal Profile detail in the game on November 19 and update this page.
Frequently asked questions
What is the Criminal Profile in GTA 6?
A reputation GTA 6 keeps for Jason and Lucia separately, rating how you commit crime. Previews name four states: Professional, Aggressive, Violent and Psycho. The details come from July 2026 previews. Rockstar has not explained it, though Postmode spotted what it reads as profile icons under the portraits on the Extended Look's switch wheel.
Can the Criminal Profile be reset?
Up to a point. Restraint moves you back toward Professional. But push past Psycho and the profile icon cracks, then shatters, and Vice reports it stays locked for the rest of that playthrough. Whether a new save is the only way back has not been said.
Is the Criminal Profile an honor system like Red Dead Redemption 2?
Similar idea, different axis, going by previews. Honor measured good against bad. The Criminal Profile measures controlled against gratuitous. A clean robbery is professional; shooting the clerk after the money is in the bag is not.
Does petting animals affect the Criminal Profile?
Possibly. When Jason pets a dog in the Extended Look, a small angel icon appears on screen, which Postmode reads as a background stat changing, perhaps the profile. Engadget's recap says feeding animals and putting trash in a bin can help a character's profile, and KeenGamer's summary of IGN's preview mentions disposing of rubbish properly. Petting itself has not been tied to the profile, and how much small acts weigh against violence is unknown.
Can you turn off Criminal Profile notifications?
Reportedly yes. The pop-ups when your profile shifts can be turned off. The tracking itself continues.
What changed on this page
- Answered whether the Criminal Profile is an honor system at the top of the Red Dead Redemption 2 comparison, and added Dazed's line that relationship choices cut deeper than honor systems, which is about the romance rather than the profile.
- Described the shattered profile as its own state beyond Psycho, marked our guesses about each state as our own reading, and corrected several sources.
