Buy the Grand Theft Auto VI: Ultimate Edition Upgrade ($20 in the US, £20 in the UK, AU$30 in Australia) from the PlayStation Store or Microsoft Store on the account that owns your Standard copy. Rockstar says you can buy it at any time; it is on pre-order on Xbox, but the PlayStation listing showed no price on September 26. Boxed copies qualify once the code is redeemed.
To upgrade GTA 6 from Standard to Ultimate, buy the $20 Grand Theft Auto VI: Ultimate Edition Upgrade from the PlayStation Store or Microsoft Store, on the account that owns your Standard copy. It adds everything the $99.99 Ultimate Edition includes. Rockstar says you can buy it at any time; on Xbox it is open for pre-order now, while the PlayStation listing still showed no price when we checked on September 26.

What is confirmed
- Price: $20 in the US, £20 in the UK, €20 in the eurozone, CA$30 in Canada and AU$30 in Australia (Microsoft Store upgrade listings, checked September 23, 2026). In each case it is exactly the gap between Standard and Ultimate.
- Any time. Rockstar says Standard owners can “purchase separately at any time”.
- Only on the platform stores. Rockstar says you buy it as a digital add-on through the PlayStation and Microsoft stores. The Rockstar Store does not sell it; its upgrade link points you to the platform store.
- Physical copies qualify once the code in the box has been redeemed. There is no boxed Ultimate Edition.
- You need the base game. Both store listings say Grand Theft Auto VI is required and sold separately.
- Tied to one platform. It is a PlayStation Store or Microsoft Store add-on, so a PS5 upgrade does nothing for an Xbox copy.
How to buy the upgrade on PS5
- Open PlayStation Store, signed in to the account that owns or pre-ordered Standard.
- Go to Grand Theft Auto VI and scroll to Add-Ons.
- Select Grand Theft Auto VI: Ultimate Edition Upgrade.
- Check the price is the upgrade price, not $99.99, then buy it.
- Start GTA 6. Ultimate items turn up as the story goes on.
You can also buy it in the PlayStation App or at store.playstation.com, and it will be waiting on the console. If the page shows no price or says it is not available, see the fixes below.
How to buy the upgrade on Xbox Series X|S
- Press the Xbox button and open Store, or go to xbox.com.
- Search Grand Theft Auto VI.
- Select Grand Theft Auto VI: Ultimate Edition Upgrade, listed at $20.00. It is open for pre-order now.
- Buy it on the account that owns Standard.
- Launch the game. If nothing seems to have changed, restart the console so the license refreshes.
If you own the physical box
- Redeem the code from the box on your PS5 or Xbox.
- Buy the upgrade from that platform’s store, following the steps above, on the same account.
The box itself is always the Standard Edition, because Rockstar does not sell Ultimate physically. You never need to buy the game a second time to get Ultimate: the $20 add-on is the whole step.
Paying with a gift card
The upgrade costs $20 plus any sales tax in your state, so a $25 PlayStation Store gift card or a $25 Xbox gift card covers it. Add the card’s code to your account’s wallet first (on PS5, Settings > Users and Accounts > Account > Payment and Subscriptions > Redeem Codes; on Xbox, the Store’s Redeem option), then buy the upgrade as above. A gift card is store credit: it only works in the country its account is set to, and the digital codes Amazon sells are for US accounts. On PlayStation the upgrade was not on sale yet when we checked on September 26, so credit you add now waits in your wallet until it is.
Pay for the $20 upgrade with store credit
You do not need a second copy: the Ultimate upgrade is $20 on PlayStation Store and Microsoft Store, plus any sales tax, and a $25 gift card covers it. The codes Amazon.com sells are for US accounts. Storage and a second controller are the other things worth having before November 19.

Upgrade not showing or not available?
Work through these in order:
- Check whether it is on sale yet. On PlayStation, the upgrade page still listed no price and read “Not available for purchase” when we re-checked on September 26, while the game’s own page showed $79.99 and a Pre-Order button. The US listing gives the upgrade the same release time as the game, 9:00 PM PT on November 18. Rockstar says Standard owners can buy it “at any time”, but Sony has not said whether it opens before launch, so on PS5 it may simply not be on sale yet. On Xbox it is already open for pre-order at $20.00.
- Sign in to the right account. The upgrade attaches to the account that buys it, so use the one that owns or pre-ordered Standard. On a shared console, switch to that profile first.
- Redeem a boxed code first. A physical copy is only a code until you redeem it, so until then the store has no Standard license to upgrade. See how to redeem a GTA 6 code.
- Check the box’s region. Rockstar Support says PlayStation codes only work on accounts from the region where they were sold, so a PS5 box bought in another region (the US and Canada count as one) will not redeem on your account, and without a license there is nothing to upgrade. Xbox codes are not region-locked.
- Check the platform. A PS5 upgrade does nothing for an Xbox copy, and the other way round.
What you get
Rockstar lists 16 items. Among them are the ‘95 Grotti Cheetah, a Shitzu Squalo boat, engraved pistols and a pair of revolvers, extra outfits and tattoos, five shops that only open for Ultimate owners, a PTT Youngin$ compound raid and the Classic Car Collection, a restoration commission from a fixer named Wyman. Rockstar never calls it “Wyman’s Classic Car Collection”; that is fan shorthand. Each one is described in every GTA 6 Ultimate Edition item. The side-by-side comparison is on the GTA 6 editions page.
Common mistakes
- Buying the full Ultimate Edition on top of Standard. The $99.99 listing is a second copy of the game. Buy the $20 upgrade.
- Expecting every item on day one. Rockstar says the items are threaded through the story, with new ones behind each chapter.
Not bought the game yet? Pre-order before November 20 to get the Vintage Vice City Pack.
Frequently asked questions
How much is the GTA 6 Ultimate Edition Upgrade?
$20 in the US, listed at $20.00 on the Microsoft Store, and £20 in the UK, €20 in the eurozone, CA$30 in Canada and AU$30 in Australia. Each is the exact difference between Standard and Ultimate in that country, so there is no penalty for upgrading later.
Can I upgrade GTA 6 to Ultimate after launch?
Yes. Rockstar says Standard Edition owners can buy the upgrade separately at any time.
Can I upgrade a physical copy?
Yes, after redeeming the code in the box. Rockstar Support says physical Standard owners can buy the upgrade from the PlayStation or Microsoft stores once their code has been used.
Why does the GTA 6 Ultimate upgrade say not available?
On PlayStation, most likely because it is not on sale yet. On September 26 the upgrade page showed no price and read "Not available for purchase", while the game's own page showed $79.99 and a Pre-Order button, and the US upgrade listing carries the game's release time of 9:00 PM PT on November 18. On Xbox it is open for pre-order at $20.00. Otherwise, check that you are signed in to the account that owns Standard and that a boxed code has been redeemed.
Do I need to re-download GTA 6 after upgrading?
Rockstar has not said. Upgrades like this usually unlock content that is already installed, but we will confirm on launch day.
Does upgrading unlock all Ultimate items at once?
No. Rockstar says the items are threaded through Jason and Lucia's story, with new ones behind each chapter. Whether upgrading mid-story unlocks earlier chapters' items straight away is not known yet.
What changed on this page
- Added how to pay for the $20 upgrade with a $25 PlayStation Store or Xbox gift card, and a reminder that owners of the boxed copy never need to buy the game again.
- Added what to do when the upgrade is missing or says it is not available, including the PlayStation listing, which still showed no price on September 26, and a boxed code from another region.
- Checked the $20 upgrade listings on both stores and Rockstar's rule for physical copies, and removed the unverified claim that the Rockstar Store sells upgrade codes. Also stopped calling the car commission "Wyman's Classic Car Collection", a title Rockstar never uses. Added the upgrade's UK, eurozone, Canadian and Australian prices from the Microsoft Store.
