Before launch, you get your money back by cancelling the pre-order with the store you bought from: on PlayStation before the game starts downloading (a pre-load from November 12 ends refund eligibility), on Xbox in Order history up to 10 days before launch (about November 9), and for boxed copies before they ship (on Amazon, in Your Orders). After launch, PlayStation refunds a downloaded game only if it is faulty, and Xbox takes refund requests but does not approve them all.
To refund GTA 6 before it comes out, cancel the pre-order with the store you bought it from. Rockstar only handles orders placed on its own Rockstar Store; for PlayStation, Xbox and retail orders, Rockstar Support sends you to the store. After launch, refunds are much harder to get, so if you are unsure, decide by November 9 on Xbox or November 10 on PlayStation.

PlayStation Store (PS5)
Sony’s rule: if you paid “more than 14 days before the main product release date”, you can cancel at any time before release. If you paid 14 days or less before release, which means from November 5, you can cancel up to 14 days after payment was taken. Both only apply if you have not started downloading the main game, and pre-loading counts.
- Stop an automatic pre-load. With Auto-Download on, a PS5 can start pre-loading the moment it opens: November 12 from local midnight per Rockstar Support, or possibly 9:00 PM PT on November 11 on the US West Coast if it follows the store’s clock, as the unlock does (our reading). If you are undecided, turn it off in Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Automatic Updates, or cancel by November 10.
- Find your order. On PS5, go to Settings > Users and Accounts > Account > Payment and Subscriptions > Transaction History.
- Contact Sony. Open the Cancel a PS Store pre-order page on PlayStation Support, sign in and use the contact option to request the cancellation.
- Get the money back. Sony refunds to the original payment method where possible. Some payment types, such as vouchers and mobile billing, are refunded to your PlayStation wallet.
Microsoft Store (Xbox Series X|S)
Xbox Support says you can cancel a pre-order up to 10 days before launch, which is November 9, 2026. Microsoft charges card pre-orders at about the same time. If you paid from your account balance, the money was taken when you ordered.
- Sign in at account.microsoft.com.
- Open Payment & billing, then Order history.
- Find Grand Theft Auto VI and choose Cancel.
After that date you may already have been billed, and you have to request a refund instead (see the after-launch rules below). If the card charge fails, Microsoft tries again a few days later, and if that fails too, it cancels the pre-order, so keep a valid card on the account if you want the game.
Rockstar Store (game box and Collector’s Box)
The Rockstar Store sells the physical game box and, since September 24, the $399.99 Collector’s Box, The Goodtime State - Vice City Collection. Orders for both are handled by Xsolla, Rockstar’s fulfillment partner. To cancel, use Xsolla’s pre-order cancellation form (the store’s FAQ calls it the physical item form) with your email address and the order number from your confirmation email. Three rules apply:
- It only works before the order ships. Game boxes ship from November 12 and the Vice City Collection from November 19.
- One request “applies to all the items in the order”. If the game and the Collector’s Box are on the same order, both are cancelled.
- It cannot be undone once submitted.
The Collector’s Box is merchandise with no game inside; see what is in the GTA 6 Collector’s Box.
Amazon, Best Buy, Walmart, GameStop and other retailers
Boxed copies are Standard Edition download codes that become available from November 12, so there is time to cancel, but do not leave it to the last day: an order can start shipping before then.
Amazon
Amazon’s help page says you can cancel an item sold and shipped by Amazon until the order enters the shipping process (checked September 28, 2026):
- Go to Your Orders.
- Find the GTA 6 order and select View or edit order.
- Select Cancel items and tick the item.
- Choose a reason and select Request cancellation. Amazon emails a confirmation.
Amazon’s pre-order terms say it charges when it ships the item, so cancelling before it ships means you are not charged for it. Amazon’s price guarantee page also notes that an order can enter the shipping process before the release date, so do not wait for the last day. If it has already shipped and can no longer be cancelled, Amazon says to refuse the package or return it through its Online Returns Center. Keep the box sealed until you are sure, because a revealed or redeemed code is unlikely to be taken back (our reading).
Best Buy, Walmart, GameStop and others
- Best Buy: Order Status, open the order and cancel.
- Walmart: Purchase History, select the order and cancel.
- GameStop: cancel online in your account, or at the store for in-store reservations.
Check when your retailer takes payment. If it has only placed a hold on your card, cancelling releases it.
UK and Australia. The same rule applies: cancel before the box ships, in your online account or at the store. In the UK, GAME and Currys take pre-orders; in Australia, EB Games and JB Hi-Fi do (all checked September 23). EB Games takes a AU$10 deposit, so ask how it comes back when you cancel. The Rockstar Store does not ship to Australia or New Zealand. EB Games also sold the Collector’s Box in Australia (a A$100 deposit on its A$699.95 listing, sold out September 28), so those orders are cancelled with EB Games, not through Rockstar’s Xsolla form.
Cancelling to switch? The boxed copy
If you are cancelling to switch store, platform or edition: an Amazon order can be cancelled from Your Orders until it ships, and Amazon delivers these boxes from November 12. It is the Standard Edition code with the Vintage Vice City Pack; the PS5 code works only on US and Canadian PlayStation accounts.

Amazon's help page adds that it "does not apply to lower prices offered through any program that requires a customer to join the program to receive the lower price." Amazon's release date for the GTA VI boxes is November 12.

How to refund GTA 6 after launch
Once the game is out, a refund is the exception. Here is what each store’s own policy says (all checked September 26, 2026).
PlayStation Store
Sony lets you cancel a game within 14 days of purchase for a refund, “provided that you have not started downloading or streaming it”. Games you have started downloading “are not eligible for a refund unless they are faulty”, and a pre-order that has pre-loaded is already past that point. If your copy is faulty, contact PlayStation Support.
Microsoft Store (Xbox)
Xbox Support says refunds are “typically issued for requests made within 14 days of the game’s purchase date” if you have played little. You can make refund requests “within a 90-day period, however not all requests will be accepted”, and Microsoft says there are often limits on how many game refunds you get in a year. Xbox does not say whether a pre-order’s purchase date is the day you ordered or the day you were charged, so do not count on a refund after launch. Requests go through the Xbox Support refund page, signed in to your Microsoft account.
Rockstar Store
After a box has shipped, the Rockstar Store refunds you “if the item you ordered was not received”. A damaged or defective item is exchanged for the same item, with a refund only if that item is no longer available. In the UK and the EEA you can also withdraw within 14 days of delivery and pay the return postage yourself, but that right excludes “sealed audio, video recordings, or software which are unsealed after delivery”, so keep the game box sealed if you might send it back. Buyers elsewhere, including the US, Canada and Switzerland, get no withdrawal right under this policy, though local consumer law may still apply.
Other retailers
A boxed copy follows the retailer’s own return policy. Opened boxes and revealed codes are usually not returnable, and a redeemed code cannot move to another account, so check the policy before you open it.
Before you cancel
- Switching editions? Keep the order. Standard owners can buy the $20 Ultimate upgrade at any time.
- Switching platforms? Licenses do not move between PlayStation and Xbox, so cancel and re-order. The Vintage Vice City Pack still comes with any purchase before November 20; see the pre-order bonus.
- Claimed the GTA+ month? A refund and re-order will not give you a second month. See how to claim free GTA+. Sony’s policy also says extra content you could use straight away “will stop working if you cancel your pre-order”.
- Switching from the box to digital? Read physical vs digital first, then follow how to pre-order GTA 6.
- Not sure yet? A PlayStation pre-order stops being refundable once it pre-loads. A boxed copy from a store that charges when it ships, as Amazon does, can be cancelled until it ships, but it has no GTA+ month and cannot pre-load until the code arrives. What Amazon ships and when is on GTA 6 on Amazon.
Prices for every edition and region are on the GTA 6 price page.
Frequently asked questions
How do I get a refund for GTA 6 on PS5?
Cancel the pre-order before the game starts downloading. If you paid more than 14 days before release, you can cancel any time before release; if you paid 14 days or less before release (from November 5), you have 14 days from payment. A pre-load counts as a download, so cancel by November 10 or switch Auto-Download off: a US PS5 pre-load may open at 9:00 PM PT on November 11 (our reading).
How do I refund GTA 6 on Xbox?
Cancel in Order history at account.microsoft.com up to 10 days before launch, which works out to about November 9, 2026. After that you may already have been charged and must request a refund from Xbox Support. Xbox says you can ask within 90 days, but not every request is accepted.
Can I get a refund for GTA 6 after it launches?
Only in limited cases. Sony refunds a game within 14 days of purchase if you have not started downloading it; once it has downloaded, only if it is faulty. Xbox usually refunds requests made within 14 days of purchase with little play time, and takes requests for 90 days, but does not approve them all. A Rockstar Store box is refunded if it never arrives, and opened retail boxes are rarely returnable.
How do I cancel the GTA 6 Collector's Box?
For a Rockstar Store order, use Xsolla's physical item form, as the Rockstar Store FAQ says, with your email and order number, before it ships from November 19. One request cancels every item in that order, so a game box on the same order is cancelled too. In Australia, where EB Games sold the box, cancel with EB Games.
Was I charged when I pre-ordered?
On Xbox, card pre-orders are charged about 10 days before release, and account balance is taken at once. Amazon's pre-order terms say it charges when it ships the item, and its help page notes that an order can enter the shipping process before the release date. On PlayStation, check your confirmation email or Transaction History. Other retailers set their own rules, so check your order.
Will I lose the pre-order bonus if I cancel and re-order?
Not the Vintage Vice City Pack, as long as you re-order before November 20, 2026. But if you claimed the free GTA+ month, Rockstar says a refund and re-order does not give you another one.
What changed on this page
- Added step-by-step Amazon cancellation from Amazon's help page, what to do if the box has already shipped, and when Amazon charges for a pre-order. Noted that EB Games' Australian Collector's Box pre-orders are cancelled with EB Games, not Rockstar.
- Added a store-by-store section on refunds after launch (PlayStation, Xbox, the Rockstar Store and retailers), added how to cancel the Collector's Box, and corrected Sony's rule: the any-time cancellation applies if you paid more than 14 days before release.
- Added a section on cancelling with UK and Australian retailers (GAME, Currys, EB Games and JB Hi-Fi).
- Corrected the refund rules: PlayStation refunds end once the download or pre-load starts, Xbox cancellations close 10 days before launch, and Rockstar Store orders are cancelled through Xsolla; moved the safe PlayStation cancel date to November 10, because a US PS5 pre-load may open at 9:00 PM PT on November 11, and kept November 9 as the Xbox deadline.
