Scout for cameras and witnesses, go in masked and take control of the room. At the safe, previews describe a choice between blowing it open fast, which damages some of the valuables, and finding the combination for a bigger take while the police close in.
Step by step
The routine below is our reading of the footage and previews. Exact prompts, timers and payouts get checked on November 19.
- Scout it. Cameras create CCTV evidence, and every clerk and customer is a potential witness. A crime only draws police once someone calls it in or an alarm goes off.
- Mask up. The police track your face as its own piece of evidence.
- Park a getaway with room. A bike carries almost no loot; cars, vans and trucks carry more duffel bags. Avoid anything with a tracker. Our car theft guide explains how WAINK shows it.
- Take control. Clerks, security guards and customers may fight back or get in the way. TroisCouleurs watched two store robberies and neither played out the same way.
- Get through locked doors. In the store robbery he showed Famitsu, Rob Nelson came in through the back entrance and used a snap gun, a lock-picking tool, because kicking the door down would set off the alarm (reported). GTABase, a fan database, adds backroom keys taken from a clerk who runs; no outlet has repeated that, so treat it as rumor.
- Choose speed or profit at the safe. Blow it open fast and damage some of the valuables, or find the combination and take more while the clock runs. Codes can be found nearby or come from a fence.
- Destroy the CCTV footage before you leave, if you can reach it.
- Get out and stay out. Police can set up a perimeter around a store that was just robbed in case you come back.
- Fence and bank. Sell the goods, then deposit the cash at an ATM. The full loop is in how to make money in GTA 6.

What previews reported
Most of this comes from the July 2026 hands-off sessions at Rockstar North, via Vice, GTABase and KeenGamer. Rob Nelson’s lines are from his Famitsu interview.
- Almost any shop can be robbed. Small stores are not marked on the map; you start those yourself. Higher-level targets appear on the map with an estimated payout.
- The targets scale up. Convenience stores, jewelry stores, payday lenders, banks, criminal compounds, armored vans and full heists. Rob Nelson says jewelry stores have strong security and a severe police response, so prepare.
- The safe is the decision. Explosives are fast but damage the payout; the combination is slower and pays more.
- Stealth tools. Destroying the footage and knocking a clerk out rather than killing her were both shown to previewers (Vice). The snap gun is in Rob Nelson’s Famitsu interview (reported); backroom keys come only from GTABase (rumor).
- Loot is physical. Loot goes in duffel bags, and bigger vehicles hold more of them (Vice). GTABase adds that bigger bags can be chosen during prep (rumor).
- Staff react. Employees, guards and civilians can fight back, and police response times vary.
What we expect
- Small stores for quick cash, big ones for prep. A corner store should be a quick in-and-out job; a jewelry store is a plan-first job, given Nelson’s warning about its security.
- Xbox and PS5 prompts will match. None have been reported yet, so we will add them from the game.
If it goes wrong
Break line of sight, then clear the evidence icons one at a time. Our wanted level guide walks through each one, and the police page covers who responds.
Keep your Criminal Profile clean
Each character carries a Criminal Profile that runs from Professional through Aggressive and Violent to Psycho. Vice’s preview report says staying Professional takes restraint during robberies: avoid needless deaths and injuries and get away without escalating. Vice also describes a state beyond those four: extreme acts crack the profile icon, and once it shatters, that character’s profile is locked for the rest of the playthrough.
Frequently asked questions
Can you rob any store in GTA 6?
Almost any shop you walk into, according to Vice's preview report. Small stores are not marked as robbery targets on the map; bigger ones appear with an estimated payout.
Does robbing a store give you a wanted level?
Only once it is reported. Previews say police respond when an NPC calls it in, an alarm goes off, or a stolen car's tracker gives you away.
Should I blow the safe or crack it?
Blowing it is faster but damages some of the valuables. Finding the combination takes longer and pays more, with the police getting closer the whole time. Codes can turn up nearby or come from a fence.
What is the Snap Gun in GTA 6?
A lock-picking tool. Rob Nelson told Famitsu that in the store robbery he showed, he used it to sneak in through the back entrance, because kicking the door down would have set off the alarm. That makes it reported, not rumor. GTABase, a fan database, adds that it opens locked doors quietly. Rockstar has not described it in its own material.
Can Jason and Lucia rob a store together?
Yes. Jason and Lucia rob a Hank's Waffles together in the Extended Look, and Rob Nelson says jewelry stores and small banks can be robbed alone or as a pair.
Does robbing stores hurt your Criminal Profile?
It depends how you do it. Vice's preview report says staying Professional takes restraint: avoid needless deaths and injuries and get out without escalating.
What changed on this page
- The snap gun is now credited to Rob Nelson's Famitsu interview (reported); only the backroom keys remain a GTABase rumor.
- Corrected the speed-versus-profit choice (it is about how you open the safe), removed an unconfirmed jewelry-store screenshot, and added preview-reported details on staff fighting back, safe codes, backroom keys, CCTV footage and police perimeters. Tagged the Snap Gun, backroom keys and bag choice as rumor, since only GTABase, a fan database, reports them, took the rumored Snap Gun out of the headline and added Raul Bautista's bank job to the list of robberies shown.
