Pre-launch guide Built from store listings, Rockstar Support and the standard PS5 and Xbox menus. We re-check every step when the game is out on November 19, 2026. Last checked Sep 28, 2026.
Quick answer

Rockstar has not announced GTA 6's install size, so aim for at least 200 GB free before pre-load opens on November 12, 2026. Check your space in Settings > Storage (PS5) or Settings > System > Storage devices (Xbox), then delete or move your biggest unused games.

First, the size question

No official number exists. Neither store listed a size when we re-checked on September 28, 2026, and Rockstar has not mentioned one. The 150 to 200 GB you see quoted is a guess based on Red Dead Redemption 2’s 150 GB, and the viral 676.7 GB figure was a doctored image. Our GTA 6 file size tracker explains both, checks whether it will fit on your console and will carry the real number.

Pre-order GTA VI

Code in the box, no disc (PS5: US and Canadian accounts). Amazon delivers from Nov 12, with release-day delivery for Prime.

Step 1: check what you have

PS5: Settings > Storage. Console Storage shows games, apps, media and saved data with their sizes.

Xbox Series X|S: Settings > System > Storage devices. Select the internal drive to see what is using it.

Step 2: delete the games you are not playing

On PS5, go to Settings > Storage > Console Storage > Games and Apps, sort by size and delete from the top. On Xbox, open My games & apps, choose Manage, sort by size and uninstall.

Your saves stay put. PS5 keeps saved data on the console, and PlayStation Plus members get cloud backups too. Xbox syncs saves to the cloud for every account. Reinstall a game later and your progress comes back.

Step 3: move games instead of deleting them

PS5: plug in a USB drive (Sony asks for SuperSpeed USB 5 Gbps or faster, 250 GB to 8 TB) and set it up as extended storage. In Game Library, highlight a game, press the Options button, select Move Games and Apps, then Move. PS5 games cannot be played from USB and must be copied back first, which is still far faster than downloading. PS4 games play straight from USB.

Xbox: plug in a USB 3.0 drive. From My games & apps > Manage, select games and Move them to the external drive. Xbox Series X|S games on USB are storage only; Xbox One games play from it.

This is the best option for anything you want back once GTA 6 settles in. It frees space for GTA 6, but GTA 6 itself cannot be played from the USB drive (see can you play GTA 6 from an external drive). Any USB drive that meets those specs will do for parking; Seagate’s Game Drive for PlayStation, for example, is sold as officially licensed for PlayStation, works with PS5 and PS4 and holds 5 TB, but it can only store PS5 games, not run them.

Step 4: clear captures

4K clips add up fast. On PS5, open Media Gallery to upload or delete. On Xbox, Captures does the same. Save what matters, then delete.

Step 5: add real storage

PS5, PS5 Slim and PS5 Pro. Each takes one M.2 NVMe SSD. Sony’s rules:

  • PCIe Gen4 x4 interface, 250 GB to 8 TB.
  • Sizes 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280 or 22110.
  • A sequential read speed of 5,500 MB/s or faster is recommended.
  • With the heatsink, no more than 25 mm wide and 11.25 mm thick (8.0 mm above the board, 2.45 mm below).

Update the console’s system software first. Then power off, open the expansion slot, fit the drive and format it when prompted. Games play directly from it. Our step-by-step how to add an SSD to a PS5 for GTA 6 covers each console model. More on the PS5 Pro version of GTA 6.

What to look for, by Sony’s rules (we have not tested any drive): 2 TB, so GTA 6 and the rest of your library fit, a heatsink, and a maker that sells it as licensed for PS5. The SanDisk Optimus GX PRO 850P is one such drive: its listing says it is officially licensed for PS5 and PS5 Pro, comes with a heatsink made for the console and reads at up to 7,300 MB/s, well above Sony’s recommended 5,500 MB/s.

Xbox Series X|S. Only licensed Storage Expansion Cards work, and they play games at full speed. Seagate sells them in sizes from 1 TB to 4 TB, and SanDisk sells its Optimus GX C50 in 1 TB and 2 TB, officially licensed for Xbox Series X|S per its listing. Plug the card into the back of the console; you do not need tools or formatting. Ordinary NVMe drives do not fit.

Our GTA 6 file size page lists each of these by console, with where to buy them.

Amazon

PS5 and PS5 Pro take an M.2 SSD with a heatsink in the expansion slot; Xbox Series X|S takes an expansion card, and games play from both. A USB drive such as the Seagate Game Drive only stores PS5 games: copy a game back to play it.

The Series S question

The 512 GB Series S has about 364 GB of usable space (GamesRadar). GTA 6 should fit if the 150–200 GB estimates hold, but it may be the only big game you can keep installed. The 1 TB Series S has about 800 GB usable, per TechRadar’s review, which leaves room for GTA 6 and a few other big games. If you rotate several large games, an expansion card or a USB drive for parking games is worth it. Still choosing which Series S to buy? The 1 TB model is the one with room to spare. Checklist for November 11

  • At least 200 GB free on internal storage, the M.2 SSD or the expansion card.
  • Console set to download in Rest Mode or Sleep.
  • Digital pre-order in your library, or the physical code redeemed as soon as the box arrives.
  • On a slow connection, a plan to start the pre-load early: see how long GTA 6 will take to download.

Then follow how to pre-load GTA 6 and the launch-night checklist.

Frequently asked questions

How much space should I free up for GTA 6?

At least 200 GB on internal storage, plus room for a day-one update. Rockstar has not announced the size and neither store lists one; estimates of 150–200 GB are guesses. The GTA 6 file size page has a checker for your console.

Should I delete games or move them to a USB drive?

Move anything you plan to play again. Both consoles can park current-gen games on a USB drive, and copying one back is much faster than downloading it. Delete only what you are done with. GTA 6 itself cannot run from USB; see can you play GTA 6 from an external drive.

What SSD works in a PS5?

An M.2 NVMe SSD on PCIe Gen4 x4, from 250 GB to 8 TB, in sizes from 2230 to 22110. Sony recommends 5,500 MB/s or faster and a heatsink that keeps the total thickness within 11.25 mm. The PS5 Slim and PS5 Pro use the same kind of slot. Our PS5 SSD guide walks through fitting one.

What is the cheapest way to make room on a 512 GB Xbox Series S?

Move your other Series games to a USB drive and keep the internal SSD for GTA 6. The 512 GB model has only about 364 GB usable, so GTA 6 may be the only big game installed. To add space you can play from, only an official Storage Expansion Card works (Seagate sells 1 TB to 4 TB, and SanDisk sells 1 TB and 2 TB). See GTA 6 on Xbox Series S.

What changed on this page

  • Re-checked the stores on September 28: still no install size. Added which drives to look for if you need more room, picked by Sony's and Microsoft's published requirements (we have not tested any), and corrected the Xbox card makers: SanDisk now sells the Optimus GX C50 expansion card.
  • Trimmed the file-size background to a short summary and linked our GTA 6 file size page, which now covers external drives and download times. The size is still not announced as of September 26.
  • Corrected the 676.7 GB hoax origin (a Christmas Eve 2025 image recycled by a parody account in June 2026) and the Xbox expansion card sizes (up to 4 TB), and checked the PS5 SSD and USB storage steps against Sony's support pages. Added sourced usable-space figures for both Series S models, and matched the 1 TB Series S to TechRadar's 'roughly 800GB' usable. The Series S answer no longer says GTA 6 will almost certainly fit, since the install size is not announced.
