What PlayStation and Microsoft say
Sony's official GTA 6 page and the Microsoft Store listing settle this on their own, checked on September 23, 2026.

Everything else follows from that. The boxed physical edition is a download code for PS5 or Xbox Series X|S, so it will not work on a PS4 or Xbox One. The free GTA+ month on digital pre-orders is a GTA Online membership, not a way to play GTA 6. Rockstar has said since Trailer 1 in December 2023 that the game is for current consoles, and the platforms page tracks every platform question in one place.
Why there is no PS4 or Xbox One version
Rockstar has not explained it, so this is our reading. Sony's own copy for the game says it uses the PS5's high-speed SSD for near-instant loading, and the PS4 and Xbox One load from much slower hard drives. The one frame-rate report says the current consoles ran GTA 6 at 30 fps during development, which leaves no headroom for machines from 2013. reported
Rockstar's history points the same way. GTA V is the only recent Rockstar game that launched on an outgoing generation: it came out in September 2013, two months before the PS4.

The fake Xbox One listing
The "GTA 6 needs 676.7 GB" screenshot that went viral around Christmas 2025 claimed to be an Xbox Store page, and it listed Xbox One as a supported console. It was a doctored image posted on X on December 24, 2025, and the poster later admitted it was a joke; the number riffed on the "6-7" meme. reported A parody account recycled it in June 2026. It was never a real store listing. The Xbox One line alone gave it away. The GTA 6 file size page covers the real estimates, and the GTA 6 rumor tracker collects other hoaxes like it.

Remote Play is the only route that works today, and it still needs a PS5. It is useful for playing on a second TV where an old PS4 sits, not for skipping the upgrade.
Upgrading from a PS4 or Xbox One
If you are still on last-gen hardware, you need a new console for November 19. Prices checked on September 23, 2026 and re-checked on September 26:

A digital-only console is fine: the GTA 6 physical edition is a download code with no disc. On a 512 GB Series S or a base PS5, plan your storage, because the install size is unannounced and expected to be large. Can you play GTA 6 on PS4?
No. GTA 6 is a PS5 game, and PlayStation's official GTA 6 page states that it is not playable on PlayStation 4. The only way to see it on a PS4 is Remote Play, streaming from a PS5 you own.
Is GTA 6 on Xbox One?
No. The Microsoft Store listing says "Play with Xbox Series X|S" and lists no Xbox One support. The viral 676.7 GB listing that showed Xbox One was a doctored image.
Can I stream GTA 6 to my Xbox One with Xbox Cloud Gaming?
Not as things stand. Microsoft lets Game Pass members stream select cloud-playable games they own to Xbox consoles, but the GTA 6 listing does not show cloud play, and reporting says GTA 6 will not be on Game Pass at launch. Neither Microsoft nor Rockstar has announced cloud streaming for it.
Will GTA 6 come to PS4 or Xbox One later?
Nothing suggests it. Rockstar has never announced a last-generation version, and none of its major console releases has later been ported back to an older console generation. Plan on a PS5 or Xbox Series X|S.
