Why every GTA 6 spec sheet is fake

Search "GTA 6 system requirements" and you will find confident tables with a minimum CPU, GPU and RAM. Look at who publishes them: PC-builder shops, key resellers and benchmark aggregators. None cites Rockstar, because Rockstar has said nothing. There is no public PC build to datamine, no store listing to scrape and no developer interview about PC hardware. The numbers change from site to site because each one guessed on its own.

Real requirements will come from Rockstar, most likely in a Newswire post about the PC version. Red Dead Redemption 2's PC specs appeared in October 2019, less than a month before its November 5 launch. Until then, treat any spec table as fiction.

An estimate built from the PS5

The one hardware target that exists is the console the game is built for. The PlayStation 5 has an 8-core AMD Zen 2 CPU at up to 3.5 GHz, a custom RDNA 2 GPU at about 10.3 teraflops, 16 GB of GDDR6 shared between CPU and GPU, and a custom NVMe SSD rated at 5.5 GB/s. According to YouTuber Davy Jones, Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson said the consoles were running the game at 30 fps during development reported. A PC that matches the console experience needs to match those parts, and a PC that runs it at 60 fps needs to beat them.

Every line below is our estimate. It is not a leak and it is not from Rockstar.

Red Dead Redemption 2 supports the shape of this table. Its official PC minimum was a Core i5-2500K or FX-6300 with a GTX 770 or R9 280, 8 GB of RAM and 150 GB of storage; the recommended spec was a Core i7-4770K or Ryzen 5 1500X with a GTX 1060 or RX 480 and 12 GB of RAM, with the same 150 GB. Those were roughly the console equivalents of 2018. Move each tier forward one console generation and you land near the estimates above.

Storage is the one thing you can prepare for

No install size has been announced for any platform, and the viral "676 GB" figure is a hoax. Community estimates cluster around 150 to 200 GB rumor, close to GTA V (over 100 GB with updates) and Red Dead Redemption 2 (150 GB on PC). RDR2 did not require an SSD, but GTA 6 streams its world on consoles built around fast SSDs, and a hard drive would likely struggle to keep up. If you are building or upgrading a PC with GTA 6 in mind, a 1 TB NVMe drive is cheap insurance. The GTA 6 file size page will carry the official number as soon as one exists.

The engine question

GTA 6 runs on the latest version of Rockstar's in-house RAGE engine, according to reporting, the same family that powered GTA IV, GTA V and both Red Dead Redemption games. RAGE has scaled up well on PC before: GTA V and RDR2 both offered settings beyond their console versions, including higher resolutions, unlocked frame rates, longer draw distances and better shadows. That is why a PC port is expected to be the best-looking version when it arrives.

What to do next

A note on "can you run it" tools. Sites that scan your PC against GTA 6 requirements are comparing your hardware to numbers they made up. The result means nothing until Rockstar publishes specs.

Frequently asked questions

What are the GTA 6 system requirements?

There are none. Rockstar has not announced a PC version, so it has not published minimum or recommended specs. Every "official" GTA 6 spec sheet online is made up.

Will my PC run GTA 6?

Nobody can say until Rockstar publishes requirements. Our estimate of a console-level floor, based on the PS5 hardware the game targets, is an 8-core CPU, 16 GB of RAM, a GPU in the RTX 3060 or RX 6700 XT class and an NVMe SSD. That is our estimate, not Rockstar's.

Do I need an SSD for GTA 6 on PC?

Probably, but nothing is announced. Red Dead Redemption 2's official PC specs asked for 150 GB of storage and did not require an SSD. GTA 6 is built around the PS5 and Xbox Series SSDs, and several recent big PC releases, Starfield among them, list an SSD as required, so plan on an NVMe drive with 200 GB free.

How much VRAM will GTA 6 need?

Unknown. The PS5 shares 16 GB of memory between CPU and GPU. Recent console ports at 1440p often want 10 to 12 GB of VRAM for high textures, so as an estimate treat 8 GB as a likely minimum and 12 GB or more as comfortable.

Where did the leaked GTA 6 system requirements come from?

Nowhere credible. The circulating sheets are written by PC-builder and key-reseller sites to catch search traffic. Rockstar has released no PC build, so there is nothing to datamine.

What changed on this page

  • Replaced a dead link to Sony's PS5 specs page with Sony's own PS5 spec sheet on the PlayStation Blog, which lists every PS5 figure quoted here. Still no PC version or official requirements (re-checked September 28).
  • Removed a wrong claim that Red Dead Redemption 2 on PC recommended an SSD (its official specs asked for 150 GB of storage, with no SSD requirement) and marked the 30 fps detail as reported.
