What IGN published
On October 7, 2026, IGN posted the complete transcript of its interview with Rob Nelson, co-studio head at Rockstar North, recorded during the hands-off preview sessions Rockstar ran for press earlier in development. IGN had already drawn on the conversation for its August preview coverage, but GamesRadar and gHacks report that the full transcript went online this week with quotes that had not been printed before.
Money will gate some missions
Nelson told IGN that cash carries more weight in this story than in past Grand Theft Auto games: “we have made money matter more in this story than I think it has in previous Grand Theft Auto games,” he said, per GamesRadar. He described stretches where players have to go out and earn money first, whether by boosting and selling cars or robbing a location, before a mission will move forward. That tracks with what GTA 6’s money system already reports from this fall’s previews, that funds can temporarily gate story progress. The new detail is Nelson naming the earning methods, car theft and robbery, directly.
Missions get more routes
In a separate answer, Nelson said Rockstar “made a very conscious effort to open things up where possible” when building missions, describing a balance between freedom and storytelling: more than one way to reach an objective instead of a single scripted path. He did not name specific missions, and no trailer has shown a side-by-side comparison of routes through the same objective.
What is still not said
Neither IGN’s interview nor the outlets covering it give a dollar figure for how much money a mission needs, or say whether coming up short delays a mission or blocks it outright. Rockstar has not posted these quotes on its own channels. Everything here is Nelson speaking to press, so it is reported, not confirmed.
What it means for players
Treat the open world between missions as work, not sightseeing. The methods already reported for raising cash fast are robberies and car theft, covered step by step in how to make money in GTA 6, and bank it before risking a death or an arrest. The character pulling Jason and Lucia into the bigger scores previews keep describing is bank robber Raul Bautista, so expect the money-first missions to run through him.
