Quick answer

Pre-load on November 12, leave your PS5 in Rest Mode or your Xbox in Sleep on the night of November 18, and be signed in and online at your unlock time. The PlayStation Store lists one US and Canada unlock at midnight Eastern (9:00 PM PT on November 18); Xbox has not listed a time.

Before November 12, if you bought the box

A boxed copy can only pre-load once the code is in your hands. Amazon’s listing says shipments “will begin arriving November 12 for pre-load”: Prime members get free release-day delivery that day, and standard delivery can arrive later, so check the date at checkout. Picking up a box from a store on November 12 is the other fast route. More on what Amazon ships and when.

One week out (November 12)

Pre-load from local midnight, redeeming a boxed code first; how to pre-load GTA 6 has the steps for both consoles.
Check that the game shows as installed, not queued.

The day before (November 18)

PS5: Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode, turn on Stay Connected to the Internet. Xbox: Settings > General > Power options, choose Sleep.
Leave spare space beyond the install for a day-one patch. Rockstar has not announced one, and a patch can only install if there is room for it. See how to free up storage, or what to buy by console if deleting is not enough.
Install any pending console system update.
Charge your controllers. The story runs about 80 hours on Rob Nelson’s own playthrough (reported by Vice from The New York Times), so a charging dock for two DualSense pads or a rechargeable pack for an Xbox controller saves a mid-mission cable hunt; see charging and spare controllers. The Limited Edition DualSense comes out the same day as the game.
Put the console in Rest Mode or Sleep, not fully off, so a patch can download overnight.

At unlock time

Know your time: on PS5 the whole US and Canada unlock together at 12:00 AM Eastern (9:00 PM Pacific on November 18). Every region is on GTA 6 unlock time in your time zone.
Wake the console and sign in to the account that owns the game.
Launch from your library. If the tile is still locked, restart the console once; license checks sometimes lag until a reboot.
Do not uninstall and reinstall. A locked tile after unlock time is usually a license that has not refreshed yet, not a bad install.

Should you use the New Zealand trick?

New Zealand reaches midnight before almost everywhere else, so some players switch region to start a digital game hours early. On PS5 that means a separate New Zealand account that buys its own copy. On Xbox it means changing the console’s location settings, and since Xbox has not listed any unlock time, whether that works this time is unknown.

We do not recommend it, for five reasons:

Store terms. Misstating your location can breach Sony’s and Microsoft’s terms.
A second copy. On PS5, a US license does not unlock on New Zealand time, so you pay again at New Zealand prices.
Bonuses. Pre-order bonuses and the GTA+ month are tied to your store region and account.
Saves and trophies. Progress on a second account does not carry over to your main one.
Patches. An early unlock can mean playing before a launch patch is out.

No edition of GTA 6 includes early access, so there is no official way in before your own unlock. Can you play GTA 6 early? goes through every early-access claim. Pre-load, patch overnight and wait for your own time: you lose a few hours and keep your account, bonuses and saves.

After you are in

GTA 6 is single-player at launch, so there is no lobby to rush into. See GTA 6 Online.
Take-Two has been reported filing takedowns against leaked clips, but expect story spoilers online from the first hour. Mute the character names and keywords you care about.

Frequently asked questions

What time does GTA 6 unlock?

On PS5, at midnight in each store region's main time zone, per the PlayStation Store listings: 12:00 AM ET on November 19 for the whole US and Canada, which is 9:00 PM PT on November 18. Xbox has not listed a time. Every region is on our GTA 6 release time page.

Can I play GTA 6 early with the New Zealand trick?

Sometimes, but we do not recommend it. On PS5 it needs a separate New Zealand account and a second copy, misstating your location can breach store terms, and bonuses and saves stay on the other account. No edition of GTA 6 includes early access.

Do I need to be online to play GTA 6?

For the download, the license check and any launch patch, yes. After that, the PlayStation Store listing tags GTA 6 with 'Offline play enabled'.

Will there be a day-one patch for GTA 6?

Rockstar has not said. Leaving the console in Rest Mode or Sleep on November 18 lets any patch install automatically.

Is GTA 6 online at launch?

No. Take-Two says GTA 6 launches as a single-player game, and both store listings call it a single-player experience. A later online mode is reported but has no date.
