Do cars need gas in GTA 6? How fuel works, and what about EVs

What official footage shows

Gas stations are all over Rockstar's own material. official

• Trailer 1 passes an Arrow Gasoline station with a Leonard County Sheriff vehicle on the forecourt.
• An official screenshot shows Lucia carrying a red gas can past a burning car (the image at the top of this page). Whether a gas can is something you can use in play is not known.
• The Extended Look includes a gas station robbery in its open-world montage, next to hold-ups at a Hank's Waffles diner and a Zeke's Gadgets store.

None of that proves a fuel system on its own. GTA V had gas stations too, and cars never needed filling. The mechanic itself comes from the July previews.

What previews reported

All of that is reported. Vice's September 5 roundup draws on TGG's and TroisCouleurs' previews but does not say which of them described fuel. Only the "divisive" remark is attributed to Rockstar; the rest is Vice's summary of what attendees saw Rob Nelson play. Fuel also turned up in leaked footage in August 2026, which we do not use as a source.

GTABase, a fan database, adds more in its preview recap: motorcycles have a fuel gauge too, running out can strand you mid-chase, a tank lasts a long time, and electric vehicles charge at charging stations. No outlet has repeated any of it, so we treat those details as rumor. rumor

What it means in play

The design, as previews describe it, targets one situation: the car you grab in a hurry. Vice says fuel is not meant to keep interrupting play, so your own vehicles should rarely run low. A stranger's car on a quarter tank is a different story when six stars are on the HUD. That is our reading of the reports, and it points to three habits.

1. Use your own car for planned jobs. Personal vehicles are stored in garages; see GTA 6 properties.
2. Check a stolen car before you commit to it. The WAINK app already scans cars for value and security; whether it shows fuel is not known. The theft routine is in how to steal cars in GTA 6.
3. Use the pump as a repair stop. If stations fix damage as reported, a fill-up doubles as a cheap patch-up between jobs. Previews say Pay 'n' Spray still handles paint and vehicle heat on your wanted level.

Fuel also shows up in combat. Previews say Focus highlights vehicle parts such as tires and gas tanks. reported Whether a hit tank leaks the car dry has not been described.

Electric vehicles

GTABase, a fan database, says electric vehicles charge at charging stations instead of pumps.
