Rockstar has not shown how saving works, and previewers have not reported it. Recent Rockstar games autosaved after missions and let you save manually by sleeping or from a menu, so expect something similar until we confirm on November 19.
What is known
Nothing about the save system itself. These are the facts around it:
- The story runs in chapters, and the hideouts move. Rob Nelson told Famitsu the couple’s hideouts change as the story progresses (reported).
- Safehouses are given, not bought. The story unlocks them; garages are the property you can buy (Vice). See our properties page.
- Hideouts are lived in. You can eat, take out the trash and shave at the mirror, and sleep is tracked because being rested affects how some stats recover (Vice).
- It is a long game. Nelson told the New York Times his own playthrough took about 80 hours (reported, via Vice). See how long GTA 6 is.
Protect your progress
- Bank your cash. Cash on hand is lost if you die (Vice) or are taken down by the police (Rob Nelson, Famitsu); only money in the bank is safe. Deposit at an ATM before you stop playing. Our money explainer has the detail.
- Turn on cloud saves. PS5 needs PlayStation Plus for them; Xbox Series X|S includes them free. An 80-hour file should not live on one drive.
- Do not count on one bed. The hideout you sleep in this chapter may not be yours next chapter.
Launch-day checklist
We will test these in the first hour on November 19 and rewrite this page with the answers:
- Where the manual save lives: pause menu, phone, bed, or more than one.
- How many save slots there are.
- Whether sleeping saves the game.
- Whether autosave fires after robberies and side activities, or only after story missions.
- Whether the Criminal Profile, which locks for a playthrough once it shatters, is tied to a save slot.
