What "gone gold" means
A game goes gold when the version that ships on launch day is finished and signed off. The phrase comes from the gold-colored master discs studios used to send to the pressing plant. On PS5 and Xbox today it means the build has passed Sony's and Microsoft's certification checks and is locked for release.
It is a studio milestone, not a store event, so publishers do not always announce it. When they do, it is usually a short social post, and fans read it as the end of delay worries. It does not mean the game is bug-free: work continues after gold, and those fixes arrive as a patch, often on or before launch day.
Why gold works differently for GTA 6
The GTA 6 physical edition is a download code in a box, with no disc. Take-Two confirmed it in the June 24, 2026 pre-order announcement, with physical copies available from November 12. official So there is no factory waiting on a finished disc image, which is what "gold" originally described.
Our reading: the milestone that matters now is certification of the build that goes up for pre-load. Digital buyers and code-in-box buyers alike download the game from November 12, so a certified launch version has to be on the PlayStation Store and Microsoft Store by then. Whether Rockstar will call that moment "gold" in public is not known.

GTA V went gold 23 days before launch. For Red Dead Redemption 2 we have not found a dated gone-gold announcement from Rockstar, so we do not give one. What we can date are the launch trailer, eight days before release, and the first reviews, the day before. Precedent only, and two games is a small sample.
Carried over to GTA 6, the GTA V gap points to about October 27, 2026. That is our projection, not a report.

Watch for fake gold posts
"GTA 6 has gone gold" is exactly the kind of line fake accounts post for engagement. Check Rockstar's Newswire or its official social accounts before believing it. Screenshots of an unverified post are not a source. Our GTA 6 rumor tracker logs the hoaxes that spread.
